Reexamining Hunger Local and Abroad Maria Tamiru
2
Definition & Statistics What is Hunger? – Hunger is the condition in which one is unable to receive needed nutrients due to their lack of food. Statistics – 1.2 billion people worldwide live in extreme poverty. Meaning they live on less than $1.25 a day.
3
Causes of Food Insecurity Major causes: Poverty Food has become a private commodity Not affording food Harmful Economic Systems CEO’s make a salary about 200 times greater than their employees who make $7.25 an hour. Food dumping to developing nations leads to farmers having to compete with out of state, cheap, below the market food. Other causes: Climate change, National internal conflict
4
The Common Good – A common good is a good or service, available to everyone in a community, that benefits and promotes growth and prosperity to that community. – Everyone needs food to thrive, food security is a common good. It should be available and a common good to all individuals. – Food security leads to individuals prospering and in turn are able to grow their communities.
5
Do Something, Anything – Many people my age and social class believe that hunger is a far away problem – Hunger doesn’t have a face, it doesn't discriminate based on race, religion or age. – Hunger can be fought locally, just be creative. – Global Hunger- donate to a charity or cause that will make a real difference, write to congress, fundraise, and of course volunteer. – How I contributed: Donated money to Feed More, a Richmond food bank organization combating hunger and helping the homeless. Money went toward 125 meals for the homeless. – Swiped food for the homeless – Swipes are wasted every semester and money just goes unused
6
Overall – Help your community grow whichever way you can. – Get past the stigma that homeless people are crazy. – Many just want to talk and share their stories – Being a student doesn’t mean you’re unable to help.
