Class will start at the top of the hour! Please turn the volume up on your computer speakers to access the audio feature of this seminar. WELCOME TO CE101 Introduction to Early Childhood Education Unit 5 WELCOME TO CE101 Introduction to Early Childhood Education Unit 5

Audio and Text Check I am aware that many of you are new to online learning and to using computers, so before we get started… lets conduct a quick audio check. If you can’t hear me, please confirm that the volume on your speakers are on and if you have external speakers confirm that they are plugged in. If you can’t hear me, please try logging out and back in. This often fixes the problem. If you cannot type into the text box, please hit the f11 key. If this does not work – please call Tech Support at 1-866- 522-7747

Introduction This unit will give background on the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The mission of NAEYC is "to promote high-quality, developmentally appropriate programs for all children and their families" (Bredekamp & Copple). We'll explore their recommendations for early learning programs. The NAEYC provides information on developmentally appropriate practices, a Code of Ethical Conduct, and best practices in any classroom environment.

Learning Outcomes After completing this unit, you should be able to: Describe NAEYC and how it benefits early learning programs Discuss the key principles of developmentally appropriate practices Explain the importance of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.

Reading The readings will address NAEYC and Best Practices. * Note: you are also encouraged to share information from additional resources that deepens our understanding of the topics discussed in our discussion boards. Feel free to jump in on the conversations there.

Starting Questions What do you believe are the most important rights of children, parents, and teacher? How do you believe teachers of young children should conduct themselves with other teachers, with young children, and with families? What does ‘professionalism’ mean to you?

Overview of NAEYC It: Emphasizes that knowledge of child development is key foundation Supports strong partnerships with families Promotes observation and assessment as integral to quality practice Articulates a code of ethics for ECE practice

NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct Statement Guidance for handling ambiguous dilemmas (you’re torn between obligations, beliefs) More than one possible solution Parties involved are in conflict Resolution has positive and negative consequences Obligation to all parties involved

Ethics Guide professionals in respectfully and sensitively handling ethical dilemmas and conflicting situations. Ethical dilemmas are complex situations that are not solved by research or law and for which there is more than one course of action, with potentially negative impact on one party.

Virtual Field Trip: http://www.naeyc.org/files/naeyc/file/positions/ Ethics%20Position%20Statement2011.pdf What are the principles that stand out to you after reviewing the COE Conduct and Statements?

COE Basic Guidelines Respect worth and dignity of every child Valuing childhood as a unique time Supporting family bonds Fostering healthy development Validating the impact of individual culture What key principles of the Code of Ethical Conduct statements do you think would be the most challenging to implement? What can you do to alleviate these challenges?

Key Considerations Teachers are in position of power and authority over children. You must maintain: Personal integrity — doing the right thing because it’s right, not because someone is watching Professional ethics and responsibility — holding yourself to a high standard, taking responsibility for your actions

Teachers’ Responsibilities Preserve child’s right to safe, healthy setting Empower each individual child Remain current in field research Ensure access to quality programs for all children Above all else, DO NO HARM

Seminar Questions The mission of NAEYC is "to promote high-quality, developmentally appropriate programs for all children and their families" (Bredekamp & Copple). What are your thoughts about this mission statement? How can you make sure that your child care or preschool program follows this mission?

Unit 6 Project Please take ten minutes and go to the Unit 6 Project Icon in the course. Read the directions and come back with one question. Please look over the rubric and the template in class as your guide. Who are you writing this parental involvement plan for? Who is your audience? 15

Unit 6 Project Parent Involvement Plan Imagine you are working with one- and two-year- olds in a child care center. The majority of the children have special needs and receive early intervention. Many of the children’s parents work two jobs and have a difficult time participating in the center's activities. Whenever the center plans an event, the parental involvement is lower than desired. The center has tried to increase parental involvement – through such methods as calling to remind parents and sending home notices – but is not having any luck. What is the issue here?

Unit 6 Project : What do we know so far? Your assignment is to create a Parental Involvement Plan to encourage better participation from parents (Your audience: Staff and director...not parents). Step 1: Identify the issue. (Lack of parental involvement) Step 2: Discuss your beliefs about the situation. What are the reasons why your parents are not participating? Why do you think what you do? Do you have research to support your opinion? No, what about a short trip to the KU Library?

How to get to the Library? Click on My Studies and then on Library

What words did you search? Parental involvement and children with special needs Parental involvement and transportation issues Parental involvement and working parents Parental involvement and single parents Day cares and parental involvement ???? Now that you have some research ideas...let’s keep going to the next step for Project 6.

More on Unit 6 Project: Step 3: Formulate conclusions and offer suggestions to the director of the child care center. (Note this is not the same as the actual plan in step 4). Step 4: Create a Parent Involvement Plan for the teachers to use and refer to often (You should include communication efforts and a planned event with details). I will accept the plan in a bulleted format or in paragraph form or in a table. The choice is up to you.

Include Communication Efforts in Step Four: Daily/ Weekly Journal /Folder Conferences Phone calls/ Emails/ Mailings Newsletter, Flyer, or Website listing current events, curriculum topics, ideas for home activities, community events, etc. Parent Announcement Board/ Message Center Parent Lending Libraries with material that increasing understanding of relevant topics/philosophies Student Lending Bags with material that extends current learning goals/ objectives Home reminder notices via stickers/ diapers/ etc. Home Visits (Erdakos, 2011, Slide 3). In text citation

Include a planned event (add details) in Step Four: Parent Coffees (morning/ evening) where discussions can address specific issues or general concerns of parents. Parent Day where parents are welcome to spend all or part of a day in the classroom. Parent Volunteer Program where parents are utilized as classroom volunteers. Parent Visiting List where parents can sign up to visit the classroom at times convenient to their personal schedules. (Eradakos, 2011, Slide 5). In text citation

Unit 6 Project Rubric Maximum 100 Points 90 Points You created a Parent Involvement Plan in response to the scenario listed in the instructions. Your plan included the following steps: Step 1: Identify the issue. Step 2: Discuss your beliefs about the situation. Step 3: Formulate conclusions and offer suggestions to the director of the child care center. Step 4: Create a Parent Involvement Plan for the teachers to use and refer to often. 10 points Each section of your paper meets or surpasses minimum requirements for length, follows required format and contains no spelling or grammatical errors. It contains a separate title page, properly formatted, a separate reference page and was typed using a 12 point font (Ariel or Times New Roman).

What elements will you include in your plan? Please list a few methods that you plan to use in your paper to promote communication from school to home Please list a few events or programs to promote parent partnerships Keep in mind that there is a PPT in Doc Sharing with even more ideas for Parental Involvement.
