Science Content Biological Science Physical Science: Chemistry Earth & Space Science Technology & Engineering Environment & Ecology Health & Safety

Chromatography The range of laboratory techniques used to separate mixtures.

Forensic Science Example Can you use chromatography to figure out which marker was used to write the “secret message” at the crime scene? I wrote the secret message.

Forensic Science Example Can you use chromatography to figure out which marker was used to write the “secret message” at the crime scene? ABCD SharpieCrayolaRose ArtDry Erase

Forensic Science Example Tape each strip to a stick. Dip the strip in water such that the dot is above the water line. ABCD Sharpie O Crayola O Rose Art O Dry Erase O

Forensic Science Example Compare your results to the “secret message” strip. What marker is the culprit? ABCD Sharpie O Crayola O Rose Art O Dry Erase O I wrote the secret message.

Health Science Example Date: 8/26 Title: Kool-Aid Chromatography Question: Beth is allergic to blue dye in foods and beverages. Which flavors of Kool-Aid should she avoid? Orange Black Cherry Tropical Punch Grape Hypothesis/Prediction:

Procedure: 1. Place 2 drops of water in each Kool-Aid cup. 2. Mix the Kool-Aid and water with the stirrer. 3. Tape the filter strip to a stick. 4. Use a Q-tip to put a dot of Kool-Aid mixture in the middle of a filter strip above the water line. 5. Hang the filter strip into a clear cup of water so the dot is above the water line. 6. Repeat with each Kool-Aid flavor using a separate filter strip and water cup for each.

Results (Place a checkmark under the color dye you see present for each flavor): Conclusion (Which flavors should Beth avoid?): Red DyeBlue DyeYellow Dye orange black cherry tropical punch grape

Review Science Content Goal: What is chromatography? How might it be useful for forensic science? How might it be useful for health science? Pedagogical Content Goal: What are important classroom rules to establish to maintain a SAFE science classroom learning environment?
