Assignment for Week 6- Community Event Lisa VanRavenswaay EDU620: Meeting Individual Students Needs with Technology Instructor Patricia Neely 08/10/2015

What is Universal Design for Learning or UDL?

Definition: “ A philosophy of instructional design that seeks to create instructional learning environments and materials that proactively value diversity by embedding supports for students to foster access and engagement.” (Edyburn, 2013)

Universal design for learning is essential for the success of all students. No one student will ever learn the same. So how are we to make sure that all our students are successful ? That is where UDL comes in. The goal of universal design is “to proactively value diversity such that supports are embedded into instructional materials before a student needs them.” (Edyburn, 2013) So where do we being?

Multiple means of representation Multiple means of expression Multiple means of engagement Three Principles of UDL:

Station 1 Individuals will enter the station and sit at the computers. The computers are logged into DCMP.org or Described and Captioned Media Program. Individuals will read a little about the website and then enter the medial library and type the word tree. This will prompt them to a series of stories that they will listen to but before they press start, they will be blind folded. This will allow them to experience the need for this type of technology for our students with learning disabilities.

Mission: To provide all students with the tools and technology necessary to strive in the future! Technology and UDL for all learners

What is CTE or Career and Technical Education? CTE or Career and Technical Education is to prepare youth and adults for a wide range of high wage, high skills and high demand careers. (N.D.) Many of these course are for high schools students to provide them with training in careers that they are interested in. Students could also receive college credits by attending these classes. When these students are ready to graduate, they will have the experience to move into the jobs that are needed within the community.

Station 2 Individuals will be introduced to career and technical education. Information will be provided about classes, hours, and fees. Some classes that will be offered are: Automotive technology Culinary Arts Criminal Justice Product Design Medical Assistant Cosmetology Earn a CDL Microsoft classes Each course that is listed above will provide scenarios that individuals can perform.

21 st Century Skills The framework for 21 st Century learning was developed to “define and illustrate the skills and knowledge students need to succeed in work, life and citizenship as well as the support systems necessary for 21 st Century learning outcomes. The seven core competencies for the 21 st Century learner are collaboration and leadership, critical thinking and problem solving, digital literacy, communication, lifelong learning, self direction and personal management, creativity and innovation, social responsibility and cultural, global and environmental awareness. (Newman, 2013)

Station 3 This station provided different types of reading materials for students. The station exhibits a text book, a lap top, a desk top computer, and I pad, and a cell phone. Individuals are asked to pick up each material, look at the wear and tear, look at the advancement of technology and the amount of material that is available to a student. For example a student who does not know the meaning of a word can press or choose the word on the computer, iPad, lap top, desk top, cell phone and have an immediate definition where the student with the text book would have to research the information. At the station, there will be a timer for individuals to take one of the given materials and race each other to find the meaning of the word that is given to them.
