3. Different Routes Formal Training/General Experience/Template Route Attained the age of 25 Have obtained an accredited honours degree Have received adequate training Have received sufficient responsible experience Mature Route For candidates of over 35 years of age

4. Routes do not require pre-assessment Formal Training Route Recognised academic qualifications 2 years of formal training (Engineering Graduate Training Scheme A) 2 years of Responsible Experience General Experience Route Recognised academic qualifications 5 years of General Experience 1 year of Responsible Experience

Routes requiring pre-assessment Product Template Route Recognised academic qualifications Membership of Professional Institution WITHOUT RRA with HKIE Minimum of 4 years experience A report of 2000 words on experience Mature Route Minimum 6 years of general experience with recognised academic qualifications OR Minimum 15 years of progressive experience without recognised academic qualifications A paper of single topic in English of 5000-10000 words

6. Application Process Submission of Relevant Documents HKIE HQ checks that all basic information complete and satisfactory e.g. academic qualifications, training requirements, CPD hours, etc. (consult DAP chairman if req ’ d) Pre-assessment panel for Product Template and Mature Route of report/paper before Professional Assessment Professional Assessment arranged by Professional Assessment Co-ordinator of Relevant Discipline

7. Training For those who have undergone formal training, you need to include the relevant information in your application. For those who have no formal training, it is important to include in your submission that the General Experience obtained is of sufficient depth, breath and quality to serve as an acceptable alternative to formal training

8. Professional Assessment Interview Direct Communication with the Assessors Determines how well a Candidate need to do in essay to pass Allows an opportunity to present the candidate’s work in person Supplements what cannot be presented in the written application Essay Test of Candidate ’ s knowledge and experience. Ability to express Candidate ’ s thoughts in a clear and concise manner in written English

Role of Assessors To ensure the standard of proficiency and competence of the Candidate Do not expect the Candidate to know everything BUT expect the Candidate to know what he/she has been doing Ensure “Responsibility” criteria and “Training” criteria (for Candidates of General Experience Route) are met NOT to make things difficult but to help

10. Role of the Applicant Be Prepared Know your own work Think of how your work relates to the areas the Assessors will be marking the interview and the essay Communicate clearly what you know during the interview and the essay Be yourself Just one of the many tests you will face in life
