Parts of a Sentence? A sentence needs two parts: a. Subject (Noun) b. Predicate (Action)

Subject Tells who or what the sentence is about May come before or after the predicate Some residents of the desert can survive a long drought.

Predicate Tells something about the subject Some residents of the desert can survive a long drought

Simple Subject The main word or word group that tells whom or what the sentence is about is called the simple subject Complete subject is noun + modifiers Example: A dog with this pedigree is usually nervous. A dog with this pedigree Dog

Simple Predicate Main word or word group that tells something about the subject Complete predicate is the verb + modifiers Example: Spiders snare their prey in intricate webs Snare their prey in intricate webs Snare

Compound Subject & Verbs Compound Subject – two or more subjects that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same verb Mrs. Robinson and her class worked on their grammar. Compound Verb – Two or more verbs that are joined by a conjunction and have the same subject I have written a letter and addressed the envelope but have not gone to the post office yet.
