2. WHAT IS SHEEC? Members drawn from all Scottish HEIs Usually the HEI representative is the Vice-Principal for Learning and Teaching Half attend meetings other half are “corresponding” members A system of rotation operates to ensure all HEIs will be attendees during the five year cycle. We also have two student members Representatives from HEA, QAA, SFC, SPARQS, and Universities Scotland also attend

3. WHAT DOES IT DO? Manages the overall approach to the enhancement themes Has responsibility for the “five year plan” Helps support institutions as they develop and embed an enhancement-led approach (SHEEC’s own theme) Supports the overall objective of the QEF to develop and emphasise a learner-centred approach to higher education

4. WHAT ARE THE THEMES? Themes are generated after discussion with the sector to identify areas of particular significance They are an opportunity for the sector to take account of and influence the developments in a particular area We seek to identify and support the implementation of new ideas and good practice in ways that enhance the learning experience We recognise that this is ongoing work involving others as well as SHEEC (eg HEIs, subject centres, PSBs) The themes provide an opportunity for Scottish HEIs to review and capitalise on this work to support learning and teaching and enhancement strategies

5. HOW DO WE DO THIS? Appoint a Steering Committee with members nominated by HEIs for their experience and expertise together with student members and members drawn from other agencies The Steering Committee will Scope the theme (identify the key issues) Develop a plan of work to address these issues Take steps to ensure effective dissemination of the outcomes of the theme

6. THE INSTITUTIONAL CONTACT For each theme an HEI will nominate an institutional contact ICs play a critical role in taking forward theme issues and ensuring discussion/action within their HEI ICs will come together from time to time with members of the Steering Committee to share thinking and to develop ideas

7. WHAT CAN SHEEC DO TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE “BUY-IN”? We need to Work harder with HEIs to “complete the loop” Engage better with “middle managers” Enhance the role of the institutional contact Work closely and productively with the subject centres

8. SHEEC/ACADEMY PARTNERSHIP Recognising SHEEC’s lead role, SHEEC and HEA will work closely together to Involve the subject centres more effectively – a vital resource for the themes Continue to use subject centres as resources for working with practitioners regarding the outcomes of themes at subject level To consider ways to enhance this model to engage more colleagues at subject level Ultimately to work together to ensure achievement of the ambitious Scottish enhancement agenda.
