2
How Cancer Develops Over Time
3
A cell phone breaks after being dropped 5 times over the course of a month. Was the last drop the one responsible for breaking the phone? Is it possible that each drop caused some damage to the phone? Was the amount of damage to the phone after each drop random, or predictable?
4
Damage to the cell phone as an analogy Normal Cell DNA acquiring Cancer mutations over time
5
Mutations in DNA cause cancer. What causes mutations in DNA? With your group, make a list of things that cause mutations in DNA.
6
Mutation Mat 1.Each board represents one skin cell in one person’s body. 2.Each board contains genes that are often mutated in cancer. 3.Each “Sunscreen Token” means you wore sunscreen that year. The gene called is protected from the mutation. 4.Each draw represents 5 years passing.
7
You have two version of each gene One from mom = maternal One from dad = paternal Chromosomes of the same type are called homologous chromosomes
9
Oncogenes Are mutations in proto-oncogenes You only need a mutation in 1 of the 2 version to form cancerous cell. An oncogene normally codes for a protein that promotes cell growth and division Outcome: Potential tumor formation because too much protein is made Proto-oncogene Oncogene
10
Tumor Suppressor Genes Need mutations in both version to form a cancerous cell Gene normally codes for a protein that inhibits cell growth and division Outcome: No effect because the functional protein is still produced Outcome: Potential tumor formation because no functional protein is produced Non-mutated TS Gene Mutation of 1 TS gene Mutation of both TS genes
