2 Pictorial Arts In what medium is the picture created? What are the picture’s important lines and shapes? How does the picture use color and light? Does the picture contain significant patterns. How are the parts of the picture combined into a meaningful whole?

3 Sculpture Is the sculpture full round or in relief? From what materials is the sculpture shaped? What is the sculpture’s texture? Does the sculpture imply movement? What is the sculpture’s relation to the site?

4 Architecture What is the building’s function? From what materials is the building constructed? What is the building’s design? What is the relation between the exterior and interior of the building? How does the building employ other arts?

5 Music What are the music’s basic melody and rhythm? What instruments or voices perform the music? Where is the music performed and for what purpose? What is the form of musical composition?

6 Dance What kind of dance is it? (popular, ballet, modern) What is the relation between the dance and the music? Is the dance mimetic? Are the dancing elements combined into a meaningful whole?

7 Theater How is the play staged through set, lighting, and costume? How do the director and actors interpret the dramatic script?

8 Opera How is the opera staged? What is the relation between the words and music? How has the director interpreted the script? How is dance incorporated into the operatic script? How is dance incorporated into the operatic narrative?

9 Poetry What form does the take? What are the patterns of sound (meter, rhythm)? How does the poem employ metaphor or symbol?

10 Narrative Fiction What form does the narrative take? What is the action (plot)? Who are the chief characters, and what are their significant speeches and actions? What is the author’s point of view?

11 Personal response What is my response to the work of art? How is that response shaped by the work itself and by my own experience?
