2. The Hatfield–McCoy feud (1863–91)
Involved two families of the West Virginia–Kentucky area along the Tug Fork, off the Big Sandy River.
The Hatfields of West Virginia were led by William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield while the McCoys of Kentucky were under the leadership of Randolph "Ole Ran'l" McCoy.

9. Jim Vance threatened to kill McCoy.
Randle McCoy’s brother Harmon McCoy was discharged from the Union army because of a broken leg.
Jim Vance threatened to kill McCoy.
Harmon hid in a cave and given supplies by his slave Pete.
Vance followed tracks in snow to kill McCoy.

10. Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield was a part of a confederate militia during the Civil War called the “Logan County Wildcats”

Randle McCoy’s cousin Perry Cline got into a land dispute with Devil Anse. Cline lost 5,000 acres.

The Hog Trial – Randolph McCoy accused Floyd Hatfield of stealing a hog.
The McCoy’s lost because of Bill Stanton’s testimony and the judge in the case was a Hatfield.

14. Hatfield and McCoy Feud

15. 1880
Devil Anse’s son Johnse Hatfield met Randle McCoy’s daughter Roseanna.
After spending one day together the couple decided they wanted to get married.
Roseanna became pregnant and Johnse did not plan to marry her.
Randle McCoy disowned her.
Roseanna gave birth and the baby died of the measles at 6 months old.
Johnse later married Roseanna’s cousin Nancy McCoy in 1881.

16. 1882
Devil Anse’s brother Ellison was killed by 3 of Randle McCoy’s sons. He was stabbed 26 times and shot.
The McCoy brothers were taken by the Hatfield clan and tied to paw paw bushes and killed.

17. 1888 New Year’s Night Massacre
Several members of the Hatfield clan surrounded the McCoy cabin and opened fire on the sleeping family.
The cabin was set on fire in an effort to drive Randolph McCoy into the open.
He escaped by making a break for it, but two of his children were murdered, and his wife was beaten and left for dead.
The remaining members of the McCoy family moved to Pikeville to escape the West Virginia raiding parties.

18. In 1888, Wall Hatfield and eight others were arrested by a posse led by Frank Phillips and brought to Kentucky to stand trial for the murder of Alifair McCoy, who was killed during the New Years Massacre.
She had been shot after exiting the burning house.

20. The End of the Feud
Eventually, the men were tried in Kentucky, and all were found guilty. Seven received life imprisonment, while the eighth, Ellison "Cottontop" Mounts, was executed by hanging. Thousands attended the hanging in Pikeville, Kentucky.

His death from pneumonia in Jan at the age of 81 got strong media attention, including an article in the New York Times, and his funeral was the largest ever held in Logan county, drawing several thousand people.
