2 The Properties and uses of Zirconium The Boiling point of Zirconium is [/K]: 4682 [or 4409 °C (7968 °F)] (liquid range: 2554 K) The Melting point of Zirconium is [/K]: 2128 [or 1855 °C (3371 °F)] The color of Zirconium is gray The conductivity of Zirconium is 0.0236 106/cm The freezing point of Zirconium is 437 degrees celsius The five uses of Zirconium are: The metal is used in the nuclear industry for cladding fuel elements since it has a low absorption cross section for neutrons. The metal is also used as an alloying agent in steel and for making surgical appliances Zirconium is used as a "getter" in vacuum tubes, in flash bulbs for photography, in explosive primers, and in lamp filaments. The oxide in Zirconium is used for laboratory crucibles that will withstand heat shock The metal superconducts at low temperatures and zirconium/niobium alloys are used to make superconductor magnets.

3 Facts about Zirconium Zirconium was founded by Martin Heinrich Klaproth in Berlin,Germany in the year 1789 Zirconium used to be called Zircon The impure metal was first isolated by Jöns Jacob Berzelius in 1824 who heated a mixture of potassium and potassium zirconium fluoride together in an iron tube. Pure zirconium was first prepared in 1914. The impure metal was first isolated by Jöns Jacob Berzelius in 1824 who heated a mixture of potassium and potassium zirconium fluoride together in an iron tube. Pure zirconium was first prepared in 1914. The finely divided metal can ignite spontaneously in air, especially at elevated temperatures. Hafnium is invariably found in zirconium ores, and the separation is difficult
