14 Protests & Riots Vietnam –Hey, Hey, LBJ… Watts Riots of Aug. 11-17 1965 –$40 million property damage –Marquette Frye, a young African American motorist, was pulled over and arrested by Lee W. Minikus, a white California Highway Patrolman, for suspicion of driving while intoxicated –Onlooking crowd erupted in a violent exchange  large-scale riot centered in Watts –14,000 California National Guard troops were mobilized in South LA and curfew to restore public order –Results: 30 dead, over 1,000 injured, over 4,000 arrested –Official investigation, prompted by Governor Pat Brown, found that the riot was a result of: high unemployment rates substandard housing inadequate schools –Despite the reported findings, officials failed to implement measures to improve conditions
