BASIC ELEMENTS OF VISUAL LANGUAGES: THE LINE VISUAL ARTS 1 ESO 1

VISUAL LANGUAGES: THE BASICS Any language has its own basics (the fundamental elements), for example any written language has letters, words, sentences, paragraphs, etc., the same happens with the visual languages... 1 ESO VISUAL ARTS

THE LINE The graphic (not geometrical) line is the second of the basic elements of visual languages. DEFINITION : A line is the trail/print that a dot leaves when it moves along a surface. With lines we can create any image we want to.
6
Features of the line as a graphic element : LENGTH How long or short is it? THICKNESS How thick or thin is it? INTENSITY How dark or light is it? COLOR/COLOUR Which colour is it? THE LINE

TYPES OF LINES
8
An important concept we have to learn is the STROKE (TRAZO) Strokes are the movements made by your hand as you draw, that give especial effects in the drawing. THE LINE
10
In the technical languages (Architecture, design, technical drawing, etc.) we usually need a kind of line that is precise and very clear, geometric lines most of the times. We use different types of lines depending on which visual language we are using: THE LINE
11
In the artistic languages (artistic drawing, painting, comic, etc.) the use of the line is more free, giving importance to the stroke, changing thickness and intensity of the lines according to the artist intentions. By using different materials it is possible to give more expressiveness to the drawing.

FUNCTIONS OF THE LINE FUNCTIONS OF THE LINE. To create volume in a flat surface To represent the surface of shapes (texture) To give the sense of motion. Create geometric designs or drawing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=ES&hl=es&v=OmSbdvzbOz Y Lines can bee used to: CREATE SHAPES : lines are the main tool of drawing, they are the most effective element to represent ideas by drawing. http://www.henri- matisse.net/drawings/ea.html
20
FUNCTIONS OF THE LINE CREATE VOLUME : Lines can give a three-dimensional sensation in a flat surface
21
FUNCTIONS OF THE LINE CREATE textures : Lines can represent the surface of anything.
22
To give the sense of MOTION : Lines can give the feeling of movement to a fix image FUNCTIONS OF THE LINE
