www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Outline Track records in user support: –Application DBs and global views; –Applications’ «gridification» and success stories; –VO-specific dashboards; –Documentation IGI plans for user support Which services IGI can offer to other NGIs What IGI expects from EGI Summary and conclusions 2 9/17/2010

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Application DBs (1/2) IGI manages an application DB connected with the EGEE one –http://grid.ct.infn.it/igi_applications/http://grid.ct.infn.it/igi_applications/ Moreover, IGI partners (INFN and COMETA) manage application DBs in the context of many other projects; IGI is in the unique position to provide EGI, other NGIs, and the VRCs with a global view of who is developing what in the grid world 9/17/2010 3

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Application DBs (2/2) Some global views The «gridification» of many of those applications have been supported by IGI members 9/17/2010 4

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Applications’ «gridification» IGI members have been involved in applications’ identification and support since the DataGrid era In the more recent context of EGEE-III, INFN has been one of members of GASuC (the Grid Application Support Centre, http://www.lpds.sztaki.hu/gasuc/) http://www.lpds.sztaki.hu/gasuc/ In all cases, the supporters, in tight collaboration with the developers, have determined the distributed computing & data model and defined & implemented the «gridification» strategy; Some success stories are presented in the next slides 9/17/2010 5

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Success stories: ASTRA The ASTRA (Ancient instrument Sound/Timbre Reconstruction Application) project aims to reconstruct the sound or timbre of ancient instruments using archaeological data as fragments from excavations, written descriptions, pictures, etc.ASTRA In Dec. 2008, a unique concert was staged using the digitally reconstructed sounds of the Epigonion alongside the Sonora Netwok Ensemble’s performance of the Czech composer Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Psalm “Laetatus sum”. To watch excerpts of the concert, click here click here In Dec 2009, the sound of the Barbiton, an ancient Greek instrument similar to the double bass, has been heard for the first time in 2,000 years, due to the power of e-Infrastructures. The computational grid resources have been heavily used by ASTRA to simulate the models and generate digital sound libraries of ancient instruments. 9/17/2010 6

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Success stories: The prediction of seizure in patients affected by drug-resistant epilepsy Electrode strip Source: Freiburg’s EEG database Epilepsy is an illness as old as human kind. It is one of the most documented pathologies in the history of medicine. A hot topic in the epilepsy research is the detailed mathematical analysis of intracranial EEG recordings aimed to detect patterns of electrical activity forecasting the incoming seizures with a sufficient anticipation. With Grids, researchers can better investigate the dynamic patterns embedded in EEGs and improve the effectiveness of conventional anti-epileptic drugs. 9/17/2010 7

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Other supported applications/communities ISMB: Istituto Superiore «Mario Boella»  ISMB is working on grid computing architectures for intensive climate data analysis; ISMB is involved in some interesting research projects in collaboration with United Nations (UN - WFP) and the Italian Space Agency (ASI); BES: Biology Evolution Sperimental (University of Bologna)  BES is working for mapping genomes of several animal species; ISMAR: Institute of Marine Science  ISMAR conducts research in polar, oceanic and Mediterranean regions; in particular, the application tested aims to analyze the evolution of oceans and their continental edges. 9/17/2010 8

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Dashboard VO-specific views A first attempt has been tested with the enmr.eu VO, supporting the installation and configuration of a dedicated Nagios server; Nagios is used to generate dashboard alarms –A common procedure about how to integrate VO-specific alarms into the dashboard needs to be discussed 9/17/2010 9

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Documentation In the context of EGEE NA4, IGI has reviewed the documentation of the «Use Cases», both updating the material already present and adding new cases related to non-HEP communities; For more information, visit: – http://www.eu-egee.org/fileadmin/documents/UseCases/Index.html http://www.eu-egee.org/fileadmin/documents/UseCases/Index.html 9/17/2010 10

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 IGI plans for user support Manage an application DB which has a super-set of tables of that of EGEE/EGI one; an automatic procedure to update the EGI DB will be put in place; Operate the GILDA t-Infrastructure; Continue the «gridification» activity; Continue the development of high-level user interfaces and turn them into Science Gateways; Extend and update the documentation (use cases, GILDA training material, «gridification» guidelines, etc.) 9/17/2010 11

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Which services IGI can offer to other NGIs 6/25/2016 12 Use of IGI WMS; Use of IGI VOMS; DGAS (a truly “regionalised” accounting system with per-VO views); The GILDA t-Infrastructure (https://gilda.ct.infn.it);https://gilda.ct.infn.it High-level user interfaces (GENIUS, gLibrary, etc.) The App. Database (for those NGI needing additional info in the apps)

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 What IGI expects from EGI Unique place on the web where to access information on recommended/supported tools and high-level services (e.g., workflow managers); Information about how to contribute tools and high-level services. 9/17/2010 13

www.egi.eu EGI-InSPIRE RI-261323 Summary and conclusions IGI is in the position to provide EGI, other NGIs, and the VRCs with a global view of who is developing what in the grid world IGI members have been involved in applications’ identification and support since the DataGrid era and success stories prove the remarkable work done Specific past activity concerned also key tools/services like dashboards and documentation update/enhancement IGI plans to go ahead with crucial activities and services for user support (application DB, t-Infrastructure, gridification, high-level user i/f, science gateways, documentation, VOMS, WMS, DGAS) IGI has some expectation from EGI (uniform access information, information concerning the way tools and services can be contributed) 9/17/2010 14
