INTRO TO VIEWPOINTS MAY 12, 2014

WHAT IS VIEWPOINTS?  Viewpoints is a philosophy translated into a technique for:  training performers  building ensemble  creating movement for the stage

WHAT IS VIEWPOINTS?  Viewpoints is a set of names given to certain principles of movement through time and space  These names are simply a vocabulary, developed by Anne Bogart

WHAT IS VIEWPOINTS?  Viewpoints is points of awareness that a performer or creator makes use of while working  There are nine Physical Viewpoints

VIEWPOINTS OF TIME  TEMPO  rate of speed at which a movement occurs  DURATION  how long a movement or sequence of movements continues

VIEWPOINTS OF TIME  KINESTHETIC RESPONSE  a spontaneous reaction to motion which occurs outside you  the timing in which you respond to the external events of movement or sound  the impulsive movement that occurs from a stimulation of the senses

VIEWPOINTS OF TIME  REPETITION  the repeating of something onstage  internal: repeating within your own body  external: repeating something outside your own body

VIEWPOINTS OF SPACE  SHAPE  contour or outline the body (or bodies) makes in a space  can always be broken down into lines, curves, or a combination  can be stationary or moving through space

VIEWPOINTS OF SPACE  GESTURE  a movement involving a part or parts of the body  shape with a beginning, middle, and end

VIEWPOINTS OF SPACE  ARCHITECTURE  the physical environment in which you are working and how awareness of it affects movement

VIEWPOINTS OF SPACE  SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP  the distance between things onstage  one body to another  a body to a group of bodies  a body to the architecture)

VIEWPOINTS OF SPACE  TOPOGRAPHY  The landscape, floor pattern, or design created in movement through space

WHY STUDY VIEWPOINTS?  SURRENDER  there is no pressure to be interesting or force creativity  we must trust in letting something occur onstage, rather than making it occur

WHY STUDY VIEWPOINTS?  POSSIBILITY  there is no good or bad, right or wrong – there is only possibility  you are the ultimate authority

WHY STUDY VIEWPOINTS?  CHOICE & FREEDOM  awareness leads to greater choice, which leads to greater freedom  you do not need to choose all of it all the time, but you are free to

WHY STUDY VIEWPOINTS?  GROWTH  self-assessment and self- awareness  personal strengths and weaknesses, freedoms and inhibitions

WHY STUDY VIEWPOINTS?  WHOLENESS  learn to listen with the entire body  awaken a sixth sense to receive and communicate more deeply
