PRESIDENT’S REPORT San Clemente 20% rent reduction! o Thanks to Zach, Emma, Carol and Christian o Chi-5 transitioning to all triple occupancy. o Family Student Housing 12% rent increase Campus Town Hall, Thursday April 7 th, 5-6:30 PM, Corwin Pavilion President’s reflection on failed fee initiative o Five votes!!! o Support is there. o Up to next year’s Exec Committee Campbell Hall Renovation Project Update o Money is there (UC/State) o 1200 seats (900/300)? o Satisfy needs of lecture and performance space o Four years to groundbreaking (aggressive)

Interdisciplinary, including graduate and undergraduate students from Chicano Studies, Linguistics, and Education; part of the Center for California Languages and Cultures Service/outreach focused, helping local Latino & indigenous high school students prepare for college by taking a course for college credit Academic, with opportunities for grad students to conduct research in the SKILLS classrooms

Research opportunities that lead to papers, journal articles, and books (‘Sociolinguistic Justice in the Schools: Student Researchers as Linguistic Experts’) Teaching experience in an informal and creative setting that allows for experimentation Weekly discussion group in which we explore the relationship between linguistics, education, and race/ethnicity Fulfillment through mentorship

Photonics Banquet 2016 32 The event includes a social hour and dinner (included in ticket), and will be followed by lectures from sponsors HP Labs & Freedom Photonics, who will describe their local photonics activities. The UCSB Dean of Engineering, Rod Alferness, will also deliver a lecture for The American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics). This year we have the pleasure of hosting Dr. Joshua Smith from Cal State Fullerton’s Gravitation-Wave Physics & Astronomy Center, who will give a talk on the groundbreaking detection of gravitational waves. We have 71 preregistrations for 80 spots as of 12:00, 5/2/16 Some funding from Industry, AIM Photonics, and IEEE National Office Wednesday May 4 th, 6pm, Mosher Alumni House The banquet brings together local photonics scientists from industry & academia, to meet and learn about local-area photonics.
