WTG – Wireless Traffic Generator Presented by: Lilach Givaty Supervised by: Dr. Yehuda Ben-Shimol, Shlomi Atias
2
GoNetworks.com 2 INTRODUCTION - WTG ● WTG – Wireless Traffic Generator ● Control of Wireless NICs ● Traffic generation ● Network monitoring
3
GoNetworks.com 3 Lecture outline ● Outdoor Wifi Market ● Go Networks ● WTG
4
GoNetworks.com 4 Outdoor Wifi Market ● Connecting offices, hospitals, universities, cities etc. ● Uniform street level coverage ● Indoor penetration ● Quality of service ● Other features such as : Security, MultiBssid, WDS, etc.
5
GoNetworks.com 5 WDS-wireless distribution system
6
GoNetworks.com 6 Outdoor Wifi Market - cont ● Unlicensed band (WLAN/NON-WLAN) ● Many Companies with different implementations are currently on the market. ● Different NICs –Intel, Dlink, Edimax, 3COM, LinkSys etc. ● Different Applications - VoIP etc.
7
GoNetworks.com 7
8
8 Go Networks ● Beam forming ● 2 interfaces ● Increase throughput, number of users by more than X2 ● Load Balancing
9
GoNetworks.com 9 Go Networks - cont ● Better Rx and Tx performance ● The smart antenna focuses the energy of the transmission to, and reception from the station Here we see typical suburban deployment using 64 (8x8) standard AP’s or as shown here 16 (4x4) GO AP’s.
10
GoNetworks.com 10 Project requirements ● Remote configuration ● Telnet based Communication ● Statistics Collection ● Basic connection checks ● UDP/TCP Traffic

12
GoNetworks.com 12 WTG – wireless traffic generator ● GUI- displays information and options ● Controls Wireless NICs on remote PC’s ● Telnet based communication
13
GoNetworks.com 13 WTG - cont Configuring Nics
14
GoNetworks.com 14 Configuring NICs ● Support commands iwconfig and ifconfig ● Up/Down ● Addresses ● Essid ● Bit rate - For cards supporting multiple bit rates ● RTS Threshold ● Fragmentation Threshold ● Power Management ● Key/Enc ● And more…
15
GoNetworks.com 15 WTG - cont Statistics
16
GoNetworks.com 16 Statistics Collection ● Available from Linux commands “iwconfig” ● Link quality ● Signal level ● Noise level ● Invalid nwid (Network ID) ● Invalid crypt
17
GoNetworks.com 17 Statistics Collection - cont ● Available from Linux commands “ifconfig” ● Tx/Rx packets ● Tx/Rx errors ● Tx/Rx dropped ● Tx/Rx overruns
18
GoNetworks.com 18 WTG - cont Ping
19
GoNetworks.com 19 PING – basic connection ● To tests the most basic function of an IP network ● ping - send ICMP ECHO_REQUEST to network hosts ● In an IP network, `ping' sends a short data burst - a single packet - and listens for a single packet in reply. An Example of a ping session: PING localhost (192.168.0.102): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 192.168.0.102 : icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=2 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.0.102 : icmp_seq=1 ttl=255 time=2 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.0.102 : icmp_seq=2 ttl=255 time=2 ms

GoNetworks.com 20 WTG - cont IPERF
21
GoNetworks.com 21 ● IPERF is an application designed for measuring TCP and UDP bandwidth performance IPERF – check bandwidth performance ------------------------------------------------------------ Server listening on TCP port 5001 TCP window size: 60.0 KByte (default) ------------------------------------------------------------ [ 4] local port 5001 connected with port 2357 [ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth [ 4] 0.0-10.1 sec 6.5 MBytes 5.2 Mbits/sec An Example of a TCP IPERF session:
