Types of Disasters: Natural: earthquakes, floods, extreme heat or cold, tornadoes, strong thunderstorms. Technological: hazmat spill(route 100), power grid, communication grid. Intentional: Terrorism (using chemical, biological, nuclear, or explosive weapons).
6
Key elements of disasters They are relatively unexpected, with little or no warning or opportunity to prepare. Available personnel and emergency services will be overwhelmed initially by demands of their services. Lives, health, and the environment are endangered.
7
Overview: In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, needs are often greater than professional emergency services personnel can provide. Do you have a plan to communicate with other family members? Could you live at your house for a couple of days with no power or running water? Are you able to assist others in the neighborhood in the event of an emergency?
8
Some quick Facts: FEMA national household study from 2009 The importance of family and neighborhood in the first 72 hours of a disaster: 70% of people studied expect to rely on the household members, and 49% say they will rely on people in their neighborhood. HOW COULD YOU HELP? Yet 40% indicate that they have not taken steps to prepare because they believe that Police, Fire, and other personnel will help them. Only 40% of people nationwide think there is a likelihood of a natural disaster EVER occurring in their community. Manchester/RT100: Is the only escape route out of the whole ST. Louis metro area, In the event of an earthquake Manchester has no major river crossings or bridges to cross. Every major highway crosses a river and contains a major bridge which could become unusable. Did you think traffic was bad when 44 flooded?
