What is the Intel ISEF? is the the world's largest pre-college science competition which is now on its 58 th year. is the world's only science project competition for students in the ninth through twelfth grades. It provides an opportunity for the best young scientists from around the globe to share ideas, showcase cutting-edge science projects, and compete for over $4 million in awards and scholarships, tuition grants, scientific equipment, and scientific trips. Every May annually, INTEL ISEF brings together students, teachers, corporate executives, and government officials from around the world.

3. Who sponsors the International Science and Engineering Fair? Society for Science & the Public, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC, has owned and administered the ISEF since its inception in 1950. The corporate world has long been a friend of the ISEF, because it recognizes the urgency of promoting achievement in science to students worldwide.

4. Title Sponsor - Intel In 1998, Intel became the title sponsor of the ISEF. Since that time they have heightened the visibility of the fair, and have made the Intel ISEF a world-renowned program with true international flavor and participation. Intel's sponsorship of the Intel ISEF is part of the Intel® Innovation in Education initiative, a sustained commitment - in collaboration with educators and government leaders worldwide - to help prepare students to succeed in a knowledge-based economy.

5. INTEL Objectives Increase the effective and innovative use of technology in teaching & learning. Celebrate and promote success in teaching and learning in science, math and engineering. Accelerate the advancement of university curricula and research in strategic technology areas. Improve technical fluency & problem solving skills among under-severed youth through effective community based education. Increase the numbers of young women and under-represented youth successfully pursuing careers in high technology.

6. Presented by Sponsor - Agilent Technologies Society for Science & the Public is pleased to have Agilent Technologies as the "Presented by" sponsor of the fair. Agilent's sponsorship dollars provide general support for the management of the Intel ISEF each year. Agilent became the "Presented By" sponsor at the Intel ISEF 2005 held in Phoenix, Arizona and has committed to this role through 2010. Agilent sponsors the Biochemistry category and also offers special awards in the form of paid summer internships and ensures that that they have global representation in placing students at Agilent sites around the world. In addition, Agilent brings a team of 25 Agilent scientists and engineers from its sites around the world to judge for both Grand and Special Awards.

8. Who participates in the Intel ISEF? Students that compete in Intel ISEF emerge from a worldwide field of several million science fair participants during the academic year. They move on to compete with more than 65,000 students at more than 500 regional Intel ISEF affiliated science fairs around the world to win the right to attend the Intel ISEF. There are Intel ISEF affiliated fairs in over 40 countries and territories, and in the U.S. fairs exist in 46 states and the District of Columbia

9. Who participates in the Intel ISEF? Each affiliated fair may select 2 individual projects and 1 team project to travel to the Intel ISEF to compete in 18 different categories: Animal Sciences, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Engineering: Electrical and Mechanical, Engineering: Materials and Bioengineering, Energy and Transportation, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Mathematical Sciences, Medicine & Health, Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, and Plant Sciences.

10. What is an Intel ISEF- affiliated Science Fair? An Intel ISEF-affiliated science fair is a science competition that is a member of the Intel ISEF network. These competitions exist in 46 states and the District of Columbia, and over 40 countries and territories. All Intel ISEF-affiliated science fairs register with Society for Science & the Public and must consist of five participating high schools or 50 students in the 9 th through 12 th grades. Fairs are conducted at local, regional, state and national levels.

11. How to Affiliate a Science Fair with the INTEL ISEF ? 12. Other Requirements for Fair Affiliation The regional fair's students and schools must be located in an area or territory that is not covered by an existing Intel ISEF-affiliated fair. The regional fair's territory must have a logistically feasible geographic relationship such as a county, several counties, a state, or an entire nation that the sponsors of the fair can effectively serve. Students and schools participating in the regional fair must be in strict compliance of Intel ISEF Rules, SRC/IRB Operational Guidelines and Intel ISEF Judging Guide.

13. The regional fair director must strictly adhere to the guidelines in the Affiliation Agreement. The regional fair director must submit all required affiliation paperwork by the established deadline. A state/national fair must meet the Special Requirements for Intel ISEF-affiliated State/National Fairs established by Society for Science & the Public.

14. Society for Science & the Public reserves the right to deny affiliation and/or participation to any fair at any time if it finds reasons that may impact negatively on the sound administration of the Intel ISEF. Any final decision concerning the affiliation of any science and engineering fair with the Intel ISEF will be made by the Director of Science Education Programs at Society for Science & the Public. 15. When and where is the Intel ISEF held? The Intel ISEF is held in a different US city each May. The Host City Committee is responsible for securing facilities, recruiting judges, promoting volunteerism, and arranging tours, as well as raising close to $1 million for Intel ISEF support. Additionally, Host Cities enjoy the pride of hosting an international event, and, in the process, generate over $4 million for the local economy.

17. Awards All participants attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) as part of their award for winning an Intel ISEF-affiliated fair. Students are judged on their creative ability and scientific thought, as well as the thoroughness, skill, and clarity shown in their projects.

18. Awards presented at the Intel ISEF Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award A $50,000 scholarship for the top three student winners at the Intel ISEF. Seaborg SIYSS Award A trip to the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar (SIYSS) including attendance to the Nobel Prize ceremonies in Stockholm, Sweden. The SIYSS is a multi-disciplinary seminar highlighting some of the most remarkable achievements by young scientists from around the world. Students must be 18 years old by December to be considered. European Union Contest for Young Scientists The opportunity to receive an all-expense-paid trip to attend the European Union Contest for Young Scientists - located in a new city each year - is awarded to a top team at the Intel ISEF. MILSET - Expo-Science International A trip to the MILSET Expo-Science International awarded to a top team at the Intel ISEF.

19. Intel Best of Category Awards Best of Category Winners $5,000 scholarship an Intel® CentrinoTM mobile technology- based notebook computer. a $1,000 grant will be given to their school and the Intel ISEF Affiliated fair they represent.

20. Grand Awards Presented in each of the 17 Intel ISEF categories, Grand Awards are given for four places. 1st Place $3,000 cash award 2nd Place $1,500 cash award 3rd Place $1,000 cash award 4th Place $500 cash award

21. What are the rewards? More than 600 individual and team awards will be presented at the 58th Intel ISEF. Each entry is judged at least four times with category awards given in first, second, third and fourth place. Awards are $3,000, $1,500, $1,000 and $500 respectively in each of the 18 categories. Additional awards worth over $2.5 million include tuition scholarships, summer internships, scientific field trips, and laboratory equipment provided by Intel, Society for Science & the Public, and nearly 70 other corporate, professional, and government sponsors. The top three winners of the Intel ISEF receive a $50,000 scholarship.

22. Who are the judges? Over 1,200 science, engineering, and industry professionals serve as judges for the Intel ISEF. All judges have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and/or six years of relevant experience. Judges, who are recruited by the Host City Committee, volunteer their time and pay their own travel and accommodation expenses.

23. Special Awards Each year, over 70 organizations representing a wide variety of scientific disciplines affiliate with the Intel ISEF as Special Awards Organizations. These governmental, industrial, and educational institutions present grants, scholarships, internships, and scientific field trips to finalists at affiliated fairs and at the Intel ISEF.

24. Two Categories of INTEL ISEF Judges Grand Awards Judge Grand Awards Judges are experienced professionals who volunteer their time to evaluate the projects of all participants in the 17 categories. They represent Intel ISEF and select the winners of the top awards presented by the fair in each category. Students who will be judged are in 9th to 12th grade and may have completed their projects individually or as teams of two or three. Required to have either a PhD, MD or a B.A., B.S. or masters degree and a minimum of six years of professional experience in a scientific discipline related to one of the 17 project categories. Volunteers for Grand Awards judges need to fill out a on-line Judge's Data Form that will be reviewed by the ISEF Judging Committee. Special Awards Judge Represent their professional organization or institution and judge finalists’ projects qualifying for their special awards

25. Special Awards Judge Special Awards judges are recruited by the sponsoring organization to choose the winners of their awards. The number of judges per organization varies with the scope of the award and the number of finalists to be interviewed. Coordinators of Special Awards should keep in mind that judging at the ISEF takes place over a relatively short period of time and a sufficient number of judges will make selecting winners a less arduous task.
