10
EHE Challenges Funding Global competition Impact of the Bologna Process
11
Funding Universities world-wide are pressed to deliver more value for less money It has to be through better governance and more efficient management of resources Recognition that investment in ICT infrastructure and support is crucial –increase staff productivity –improve student performance through better studying environment Local IT services become more strategic
12
Global Competition Attractiveness Excellence Efficiency And show it! Targeted marketing is the key but portals are still helpful here
13
Bologna ideas Establishing the EHEA Enhance the attractiveness and competitiveness of HE in Europe Aiming at flexibility and mobility for the students New teaching/learning paradigm Rethink quality assurance Adoption of a system of easily readable and comparable degrees –Rules on the structure and duration of degrees –Comparable credits (ECTS) –Relative classification system –Diploma supplement Collaboration > Standardization
14
IT Services Strategy Strategy has to be about: Anticipation –Being alert to change Insight –Seeing opportunities to offer something different and new Imagination –Dreaming up new ways of doing it Execution –Doing it consistently and to the highest standards (Tony Manning, Making Sense of Strategy)
15
Synergies Management and administration Teaching and learning Research and development CIO must be a key contributor in formulating strategic goals
16
Cooperation opportunities Develop common infrastructure projects Share experiences and best practices Standardize data models and increase interoperability Urgent IT Needs!
17
Networking Network infrastructure –Campus networks, grids, … –Looking ahead for long term sustainability Providing access to services –Wider, secure, coordinate, seamless, dynamic, inexpensive Nomadism on and across campus Global authentication in the EHEA –Eduroam extended –Technical solution involving common infrastructures and common rules for parametrizing VPNs
18
IT services Identity management federation –Guidelines for HE Digital certificates –Hierarchy of CA Online interactive transaction services –streamline and enhance processes Ongoing privacy, confidentiality of communicating and data security concerns Integrated helpdesk 24x7 maintenance
19
IS & Applications Academic IS features –Interoperable curricula –Academic record / diploma supplement –Faculty and professional curricula vitae (European, LATTES, …) –News feeds (ATOM, RSS) HE assessment and performance comparison –Data warehousing specific model performance key indicators BSC –Common assessment models and forms IS monitoring –Flexible data webhousing model and analysis
