Lesson 2 Big Question: How did the colonists work together? Main Ideas: Colonists met at the Albany Congress. Committees of Correspondence brought colonists together. Colonies sent delegates to the First Continental Congress. Colonies organized against Britain at the Second Continental Congress.

Key Terms & People Delegate: a person chosen to represent others. Committee: an organized group that meets to make decisions. Correspond: to communicate by writing letters. Unify: to come together or unite. Militia: civilian army that is used only in emergencies.

Samuel Adams. Patriot and leader in the struggle against British colonial rule. Formed the first Committee of Correspondence to help unify the colonies. Called for a strong stand against the British as a member of the First Continental Congress.

George Washington Led the Continental Army during the Revolution and served as first President of the United States. Chosen as commander-in- chief of the Continental Army in 1775. Elected as first President of the United States and is often called the “Father of His Country.”

Benjamin Franklin Patriot, printer, inventor, and diplomat who helped write the Declaration of Independence. Proposed the Albany Plan of Union in 1757. Had the idea for bifocal glasses and designed an experiment to prove the electrical nautre of lightning.

Textbook Answers 1.In 1754 the British colonies (Americans) wanted to improve relations with the Iroquois so they would be allies if a war broke out. 2.To unify the colonies by keeping their leaders aware of what was going on in the other colonies. 3.The delegates decided to stop trading with Britain until the Coercive Acts were repealed, to start training militias, and to meet again in a year if relations with Britain didn’t improve.

Declare independence from Britain. Summary: The Albany Congress showed how working together led to the common good.
