Status of software development STAFF-SC DWF, CWF-GSE,CWF-ISR2,CS, Graphics, HK All production software completed and running STAFF-SA L2 - Upgrade to new calibration tables and data free from negative values due to overflow in the auto products: completed and tested - Staff status included and on-board calibration data removed Last checks underway to validate status: small timing discrepancy between SC an SA value, now understood PPP: Small software upgrade to exclude periods without FGM data 420th CAA Cross-Cal Meeting 15-16 October 2014

CAA Delivery Despite non optimal hardware configuration and team changes most of the planned activities and deliveries for this year have been fullfilled STAFF-SC: – Calibrated Waveform GSE fully delivered (2001-2013) – Production chain for CWF in ISR2 completed and tested, production underway, 2001-2013 delivered – Calibrated spectra reprocessed with upgraded production chain, fully delivered (2001-2013) – Digital Waveform reprocessed and delivered (2001-2013) Move common status to caveats STAFF-SA: – L2 up to 2012. Reproduction of full data set (PSD,SM,AGC) is a bit late, but has low priority. Should run in coming weeks after status validation – PPP up to 2013. Calibrated data: On going 20th CAA Cross-Cal Meeting 15-16 October 20148 - The GI article CLUSTER STAFF search coils magnetometer calibration comparisons with FGM is published and available here: http://www.geosci-instrum-method-data-syst.net/3/153/2014/gi-3-153-2014.html From Progress meeting: Many minor anomalies in delivered CWF – CS files, due to - Bad telemetry, bad status - Telemetry holes Which induced missing CWF,CS or non usable data These anomalies are seldom and short period. Bad data will be removed from CAA and reason for missing calibrated data will be justified in STAFF documentation

9. Calibration issues: Next step 920th CAA Cross-Cal Meeting 15-16 October 2014 We begin to receive feedback from users of calibrated data Spurious lines ? Spin not fully removed Differences found between old calibrated data (sometimes published) and the new improved Calibrated WaveForm (CWF) …… Answers to these standard questions should be included in CAA documentation - Provide more details on the limit of use - Provide examples on the impact of the parameters used in CWF production and possible misinterpretation - Provide suggestions for getting better quality data with respect to studies

10. Calibration issues: next step -2 Most of the questions raised by CWF users were expected – Search-coils transfer function is frequency dependant and data are affected by strong spin induced signal coming from B – Signal processings used in calibration (window, FFT) induce edge effects – Producing good quality calibrated data requests stationarity (ie B vector,EM field) over the period of analysis (ie many spins) which is not typical of some Cluster studies. – New CWF significantly reduced edge effects but – The parameters used to produce CWF (window size for despin, filtering, …) is a compromise which will not fulfill all users-studies needs 20th CAA Cross-Cal Meeting 15-16 October 201410

Calibration issues: next step - 3 Initial proposal of STAFF team to CAA was to provide DWF (uncalibrated) and calibration software Provision of Calibrated Wave Form was a known compromise We have to overcome CWF limits by - Including clear warnings in the documentation – Providing our calibration software to CAA-CFA Patrick Robert suite of Fortran routines – Need some effort to implement for a standard user Consider running these sofware at CFA 20th CAA Cross-Cal Meeting 15-16 October 201411
