1 Bellwork 4/7/2016 Review Questions  At this time we will start reviewing information in preparation for the End-of-Course exam. Try to answer the following questions correctly? 1.What was the name of the secret atomic bomb research project done by the United States during WWII? 2.What was the name of the U.S. battleship that exploded in the harbor of Havana and sparks the Spanish-American War? 3.What is the system of agriculture that ties African- Americans to the land and oppressive landowners? 4.What is the trigger that starts WWI? How does it become a “world war” or how is it that so many countries get involved? Why does the U.S. get involved? 5.Describe the “Teapot Dome Scandal.” Why does this ruin President Harding’s term in office?

6 Richard Nixon - What do you know about him?

7 The Nixon Administration  Nixon wanted to turn America into a more conservative direction.  Tried to instill sense of order, since country was still divided over Vietnam.  Wanted to work to renew America’s prestige and influence on world stage.

8 New Federalism  One of main Nixon ideas was to decrease size and influence of federal government.  New Federalism was to take power away from federal government and redistribute to state and local governments.

9 Read “Confronting a Stagnant Economy” Pages 798-801 1. While reading, explain stagflation, real politik and détente. 2. What factors brought on the country’s economic problems in the late 60s and early 70s? 3. How did Nixon’s trip change the United States’ relationship with China?

14 Read pages 802-803 and answer the following questions  What was the Watergate? What was the purpose for the break-in? How was the Nixon administration involved?  What did Schlesinger mean when he claimed that the executive branch was now an Imperial Presidency?

15 Read pages 804-805 (top) and answer the questions  Who were Woodward and Bernstein? What was their connection to the scandal?  What is a “cover-up?” How did the Nixon administration try to cover up or hide any wrong-doing?

16 The Nixon Tapes  Listen to an excerpt from the Nixon tapes.  How does this reflect on the president?  In your journal write three adjectives that describe Richard Nixon.  Then discuss your three words with your shoulder partner and agree on one to share with the class.

17 Read page 805  What testimony by Alexander Butterfield stunned the committee?  Why did Nixon have these tapes?  How will Nixon handle the prosecution’s request for the tapes? What exactly happened during the Saturday Night Massacre?

18 Read “The Fall of the President” pages 806-807  What was Nixon’s argument for not releasing the tapes? Did the Supreme Court agree with him?  What three charges were presented for reasons of Nixon’s impeachment?  What was most likely recorded during the 18 ½ minute gap dated June 23, 1972?  Before impeachment hearings begin, what does Nixon do to forgo any more embarrassment? Nevertheless, what does Nixon never do?
