Taking the plunge into postgraduate study Enjoyed my degree, particularly research-focused aspects i.e. 3 rd year project Took a ‘year out in industry’, worked in pharmaceuticals – in a lab every day, hands-on work/research experience, loved it! Took a 1-year research focused Masters degree to be sure

Securing a position NETWORKING! Make a good impression in lectures, seminars, practicals Don’t be afraid to approach PhD students, post-docs, or even lecturers/professors (be prepared!) Attend extra seminars/conferences/talks, join relevant societies etc… STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD Exam results, academic achievements, work experience… Use university websites, findamasters/findaphd.com, internal adverts, careers websites, journals, societies… Or make a speculative application

My PhD experience Approached by my supervisor Named student on BHF funding application – 3 years fully- funded with stipend Investigated control of blood flow to the brain Blood supply maintained constant despite changes in blood pressure High blood pressure can cause a sudden increase in blood flow – potential to cause stroke Risk of stroke increased with age – why? Changes in normal control mechanisms? Can we correct it?
