11/12/15 and 11/13/15 1.Activity 8.1 2.Reading 8.1 3.Scientific Explanation (Big) HOMEWORK: Chemistry Unit Scientific Explanation rough draft due November 19 th (1,2,&3) and November 20 th (5&6).

Learning Goals Write a scientific explanation that includes a claim, evidence, and reasoning. Explain that burning reactions convert energy into light and thermal energy.

Activity 8.1-What Does Food Need to Burn? Background: For food to provide energy to the cells, it must go through a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction that provides energy from food molecules to the cells is very similar to burring food. Both uses oxygen and produce carbon dioxide and convert energy.

Activity 8.1-What Does Food Need to Burn? IQWST: Question 1 As a table, complete a scientific explanation to the following question: What happens to fat stored in the body when people lose weight? Requirements: Claim-5 minutes Evidence-5 minutes Reasoning-5 minutes

Activity 8.1-What Does Food Need to Burn? Activity(part 2): You will again see burning oil as a model of the chemical reaction that provides energy to the cells. We will collect evidence of all the reactants and products of this chemical reaction. Mass of oil/bowl/wick (g) Concentration of oxygen (%) Concentration of carbon dioxide (ppm) Absolute humidity (%)

Activity 8.1-What Does Food Need to Burn? Discussion: What happened to the molecules of oil and oxygen when they were used in the chemical reaction?

Activity 8.1-What Does Food Need to Burn? Discussion: What happened to the molecules of oil and oxygen when they were used in the chemical reaction? Based on previous experience with chemical reaction, the atoms of these molecules rearranged to make carbon dioxide and water. Answer the Making Sense Questions

Activity 8.1-What Does Food Need to Burn?

Reading 8.1-What Can Burning Food Teach Me about Food Providing Energy to My Body? Answer all questions embedded in IQWST. NO CLOSE READING

Big Question (for Scientific Explanation) How Does Food Provide My Body with Energy? Rough Draft Due: November 19 th and 20 th Final Due: December 10 th and 11 th Requirements: Claim Evidence (minimum of 10)-one or more from each lesson Reasoning

Pack everything up. Please put markers/crayons/col ored pencils back where they belong.
