FUNCTIONS (JOB) 1. Prevents loss of water. 2. Protective barrier: from injury and infection 3. Regulation: body temperature (example sweating) 4. Elimination: removal of waste through the pores. 5. Sensation: Gathers Information about environment. 6. Production: Vitamin D**skin cells produce vit D in the presence of sunlight 7.Stores blood : 8%- 10% of blood is in skin

COOL FACTS… ** THE SKIN PROTECTS THE INSIDE OF THE BODY FROM SUBTANCES SUCH AS CHLORINE IN POOL WATER. ** WHEN YOU EXERCISE YOUR BODY BECOMES WARMER SO SWEAT GLANDS PRODUCE PERSPIRATION TO COOL THE BODY.
6
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?? *The skin forms a barrier that keeps diseased causing organisms outside of the body. **When you become warm your blood vessels enlarge to increase the amount of blood that flows through. Heat moves out into the environment. ***Quick check: What type of muscle tissue is found in blood vessels?
7
Eliminates waste Sweat glands respond to heat by perspiring As it evaporates from your skin, heat moves through the air Sweat contains dissolved waste materials so your skin is eliminating waste
8
Your skin cells PRODUCE Vitamin D Sunlight m produces Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps cells in your digestive system absorb CALCIUM. ** QUICK CHECK**Why is calcium necessary for bones? ***What type of muscle tissue is found in the digestive system?

LAYERS OF SKIN Epidermis The outer layer of skin. It DOES NOT have nerves or blood This is the layer you can see Dermis The lower layer of skin that contains nerves and blood vessels It contains the pores, which are openings in the skin that allow perspiration (sweat) to exit the skin It also contains the follicles which are the strands of hair. Any hair that extends past the skin is dead
