2 What do we know so far? What words would you use to describe Henry VIII? What words would you use to describe Elizabeth I?

3 Why did monarchs have their portraits painted? They wanted to look better than they did in real life They wanted to celebrate important occasions such as winning a war Television and newspapers did not exist so people around the country would not know what they looked like. Some portraits were painted as gifts from their friends and admirers.

4 What can we learn from a portrait? What are the differences between these two portraits of our current Queen?

5 What kind of image do you think Henry VIII is trying to show to his people? Have a look at this picture of Henry VIII? What do you think it says about him? Now take a look at the three pictures on your worksheet. What can we learn about Henry VIII from these portraits?

7 Elizabeth’s portraits Elizabeth liked to make sure that her paintings were flattering and said something positive about her. Sometimes they even had a hidden meaning. Have a look at this picture. What do you think it says about Elizabeth I? Now have a look at the portrait you have been given. Can you use the clues to work out the meaning of the picture?

12 Why did Elizabeth control what was painted? What Elizabeth was really like: Elizabeth was short about 5'3 or 5'5 with brown eyes and red curly hair. She was afraid of mice. She had a bad temper and would throw things or threaten to send courtiers to the Tower if they upset her. She swore and spat when she was angry. Elizabeth's teeth were black with tooth decay. Her speech was sometimes difficult to understand because of missing teeth. Elizabeth was very superstitious and was afraid of black magic. She only bathed once every few weeks.
