Graphing notes The commandments of graphing
3
Making a good graph Always use graph paper Scale the graph paper (use an easy scale) –Use this equation data domain/range divided by the number of squares available on that axis Label the axis with units and a name –Y axis (dependent variable) –X axis (independent variable) Title the graph Y variable vs. X variable Fill-up the graph as much as possible
4
Finding the scale Say your data starts at zero minutes and runs for 25 minutes. You count 40 squares Now divide 25/40 = 0.625 minutes/sq So make the number easier to work with say 0.75. This is easy (much better than 0.625) ALWAYS ROUND UP!
5
Match the Graphs On lined paper number 1 through 11 and identify the following graphs. Remember to put your name on the paper.
6
1.Height of a runner jumping over hurdles over time. 2.Hours in school over days of the week. 3.Teams score in points throughout a football game. 4.Height of a burning candle over time. 5.Altitude of a plane for a round trip over time. 6.Amount of sales tax over the amount of purchase. 7.Length of a mans hair trimmed once a month over time. 8.Number of days over months of a year. 9.Leaves on an oak tree through the seasons. 10.Amount of Kleenex in the box over time. 11.Volume of a bag of popcorn as it is popped in a microwave over time.
