Solutions Contain 2 ingredients: solute and solvent Solute = being dissolve Solvent = primarily doing the dissolving Example: salt + water metal + acid

Solutions Homogeneous mixtures Particles are evenly distributed throughout the liquid Particles will not settle out over time (stable)

Solutions - Suspensions A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture Particles may remain mixed with the liquid when stirred but will eventually settle

Solutions - Colloids Colloids are stable heterogeneous mixtures They appear to be homogeneous, but under a microscope you can see other particles Example: Milk appears uniform, however, it has particles of fat and proteins that do not settle out

Separating Mixtures Decanting- pour off the liquid after a solid has settled out Centrifuge- spinning separates substances of different densities Filtration- put the solution through filter paper
