Warm Up 3-1-16 1.Riddle - I travel all over the world, but always stay in my corner. What am I? 2.Riddle - What has 13 hearts, but no other organs? 3.Riddle – Which month has 28 days? Agenda -Go over Test -Toxin Article Discussion -Notes Unit 8-1 -Lab Separating Mixtures Homework

Unit 7 Test -Test average score 15.7/ 25 = 63% -3 questions I made a mistake on for the correct answers -Take your score and add 3 to it, check Q

Unit 7 Test If the temperature of the equilibrium system X + Y ↔ XY + 25 kJ decreases, a) the concentrations in the system do not change b) [X] decreases and [XY] decreases c) [X] decreases and [XY] increases d) [X] increases and [XY] decreases

Unit 7 Test Refer to the equilibrium equation to decide which reaction will be favored: 4HCl (g) + O 2 (g) + 226 KJ ↔ 2H 2 O (l) + 2Cl 2 (g) a)Forward (shift right) b)Reverse (shift left) c)Neither (no shift) d)Both Scenarios 1) Adding a catalyst 2) Decrease in pressure

Botox Article -Discussion

Unit 8-1 “Solutions” The answers to all your problems…

Solutions Contain 2 ingredients: solute and solvent Solute = being dissolve Solvent = primarily doing the dissolving Example: salt + water metal + acid

Solutions Homogeneous mixtures Particles are evenly distributed throughout the liquid Particles will not settle out over time (stable)

Solutions - Suspensions A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture Particles may remain mixed with the liquid when stirred but will eventually settle

Solutions - Colloids Colloids are stable heterogeneous mixtures They appear to be homogeneous, but under a microscope you can see other particles Example: Milk appears uniform, however, it has particles of fat and proteins that do not settle out

Separating Mixtures Decanting- pour off the liquid after a solid has settled out Centrifuge- spinning separates substances of different densities Filtration- put the solution through filter paper

Separating Mixtures Decanting

Separating Mixtures Centrifuge

Separating Mixtures Evaporation - uses heat Distillation- separation based on different boiling points of substances

Separating Mixtures Distillation-

Separating Mixtures Chromatography- separates mixtures based on how quickly different molecules dissolved in a mobile phase solvent move along a solid phase

Separating Mixtures Chromatography-

Check In What kind of mixture is a colloid? What’s the fastest way to separate out gold flakes in water? How to you isolate salt dissolved in water?

Assignments Find a way to separate salt, sand/dirt and styrofoam. -In your notebook answer these questions 1) What is the best way to separate this mixture? 2) Is the water clean enough to drink? Summary Turn in botox toxin article
