Psychological critics view works through the lens of psychology. They look either at the psychological motivations of the characters. Psychological critics look for what drives a character, his or her desire as well as fear. Most frequently, psychological critics apply Freudian psychology to works, as well as approaches based on the works of philosopher Carl Jung (know as a Jungian approach). A more Jungian approach assumes that there is a collection of symbols, images, characters, and motifs (i.e. archetypes) that evoke basically the same response in all people. According to the psychologist Carl Jung, mankind possesses a “collective unconscious” that contains these archetypes and that are common to all of humanity.
3
Sigmund Freud is one of the major patriarchs. Carl Jung: a philosopher who helped develop this approach The Psychoanalytic approach is used to determine the motives of the characters by “reading between the lines” in the story. This approach answers the question “Why did the character make that decision?” or “What motivated the character to act in that way?”
4
This is a good approach especially if the story involves someone dealing with psychological issues. This approach also gives an insight into the author’s mind and his work. Explains why certain works survive the test of time It is also helpful with identifying symbolism in lierature.
5
It takes away the creative lens of the work. The work becomes just a riddle of archetypes and what’s between the lines. What the author has actually written is thron by the wayside.
6
Jungian approach: Motifs: death is among the living “marching together of the living and the dead” Freudian approach: Motivation: remembering those who died There seems to be repressive feelings against happy memories/ feelings “behind all this some great happiness is hiding”
