Gold Nanostructure based Fiber Optic Sensor for Detection of Bacteria using Bacteriophages presented by Pallavi Halkare guided by Prof. Soumyo Mukherji Prof. Kiran Kondabagil Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay

Objectives To develop a nanoparticle based fiber optic platform for pathogen detection, which is  Cost effective  Highly specific and sensitive  Robust  Portable and simple What are bacteriophages ? Viruses that specifically recognize receptors present on the bacterial surface. Why bacteriophages?  Highly specific to its host bacteria  Stable at high temperature and can withstand wide range of pH  Can be produced economically in laboratory conditions

Light source Spectrometer Experimental Schematic

The value of the effective response varies with the conc. of E.coli used in the experiment. The value of effective response obtained is negligible. Control Experiment Real time changes in absorbance obtained on the fiber optic probe for Pseudomonas Detection of Bacteria Real time changes in absorbance obtained on the fiber optic probe for E.coli

Potential Impacts  Can be employed for detection of different bacterial strains by using the bacteriophage specific to it  Can be deployed into a hand held device; resulting in portable, cost effective and robust sensing platform. Detection of bacteria in water Detection of bacteria in food Detection of bacteria in air
