Violence is a disease Exposure to violence as a child makes them more likely to be involved in violence as an adolescent and an adult Violence strongly correlates to inequality Violence impacts on mental well being, quality of life, prevents people using outside space, public transport etc. Violence prevention is critical in tackling other public health issues.

6. A&E Admission Data 133,896 attendances to A&E due to assault (71% male) 28,992 admissions 47% of all admissions for 15-29 year olds due to assault 1 in 8 of these involve a knife or other sharp object

Our teaching We deliver two teaching modules: 1.What to do when someone is bleeding 2.What to do when someone is unconscious Our teaching is simple, practical and interactive We aim to equip young people with life-saving skills and increase their confidence We actively encourage discussions within our sessions about attitudes to violence and share the medical consequences of violent injury

9. 2015 in numbers 1968 young people taught across 324 teaching sessions in collaboration with 101 different delivery partners taught by Over 300 volunteers working in 16 teams who are present in 12 cities across England

10. Collaborating with YOTs in 2015 Worked with 28 of YOT centres in 6 out of 10 regions 151 sessions delivered 440 young people taught 732 total attendances

11. Evidence of Impact on Young People 93% agreed they understood the consequences of violence 89% agreed they knew what to do when someone is bleeding or unconscious 85% said they would be willing and able to act if first aid was needed

13. Case Studies We know of EIGHT cases where young people have acted in a medical emergency following a StreetDoctors session. For example: One young man delivered CPR to his uncle who survived an out of hospital cardiac arrest One young man in a youth offender institute found a fellow inmate collapsed and put him into the recovery position Five young people have assisted after a stabbing One young person helped at the scene of a road traffic accident

Whatever it is that you're doing is working. 16. Feedback from volunteers ‘Before going through “A – ALERT” we asked what they'd do if they saw someone bleeding. One girl said that it depended who it was - if it was a stranger she'd call an ambulance and leave but if it was someone she knew she'd call an ambulance and apply pressure. By the end of the session she said wouldn't want someone's death on her conscience and she'd help anyone. She was getting quite passionate about this at the end and was trying to persuade others to help strangers.’ Volunteer reflection after a session in Birmingham
