THE METRIC SYSTEM (International System of Units)
3
WHY DO WE USE THE METRIC SYSTEM? Scientists need a universal way to communicate data (SI Units) Uses multiples of 10
4
THE METRIC CONVERSION CHART (STAIRCASE METHOD) Kilo 1000 units Hecto 100 units Deka 10 units Basic Unit Deci 0.1 units Centi 0.01 units Milli 0.001 units To convert to a smaller unit, move decimal point to the right or multiply. To convert to a larger unit, move decimal point to the left or divide
5
APPROXIMATE CONVERSIONS BETWEEN METRIC & US LENGTH UNITS A meter is about the same length as a yard A meter is about three feet long A decimeter is about four inches long An inch is about 25 millimeters A foot contains about 30 centimeters A foot contains about 3 decimeters
6
WHAT DOES THE METRIC SYSTEM MEASURE? Length Volume Mass Temperature Weight
7
Length Measures distance between points. The meter is the basic SI unit of length.
9
Mass Mass the is amount of matter in an object. – Matter is how much stuff is in things. Kilogram is the basic SI unit for mass.
10
Scales and Balances
11
Volume 1.Volume is the amount of space that something occupies in 3-dimensional space. Liquid volume is measured in liters (L) Liters are based on the meter? So 1 mL = 1 cm 3 Solid Volume is measured in cubic meters (cm 3 ) or cubic millimeters (mm 3 ) length x width x height

Volume

Temperature Temperature is a measure of how cold or hot a substance is. Degrees Fahrenheit ( o F) and Degrees Celsius ( o C) are used to described temperature. Kelvin (K) is the SI unit for temperature.
