Deliberation OUTCOMES Teachers will be able to: 1.Explain the issue and arguments for both sides in the same-sex marriage cases 2.Use deliberations in class 3.Teach using controversial issues

Deliberation IMPACTS OF DISCUSSION Evidence shows that students in classrooms with high quality discussion 1.Have increased political tolerance – are willing to consider diverse viewpoints 2.Are more interested in political issues and understand their complexity 3.Are more comfortable with disagreement 4.Intend to vote, follow the news

Deliberation ISSUES 1.Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to license same-sex marriages? 2.Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to recognize a same- sex marriage that was lawfully licensed out-of-state? Today’s deliberation will focus on the first issue.

Deliberation DELIBERATION STEPS 1.Pairs are assigned to a role, A or B: “A”s the Constitution requires States to license same-sex marriages “B”s the Constitution does not require same-sex marriages 2.Read, outline, prepare a short presentation 3.First Round Presentations “A” pairs present for 5 minutes; “B” pairs listen & take notes “B” pairs present for 5 minutes; “A” pairs listen & take notes 4.Switch sides and prepare to present new side 5.Second Round: Recap most compelling points “B” pairs present first “A” pairs present second 6.Collaborative Discussion – drop assigned roles 7.Reflection
