Biodiversity Challenge Game Begin a new section in your lab notebook… The Challenge : How are the biodiversity of an ecosystem and the sustainability of human communities related?
2
Sustainability and Ecosystems The “Triple Bottom Line” If we cut trees from a tropical rainforest to provide building material, fuel or grazing land, we help the economy and society but hurt the environment.

Sustainability and Ecosystems The “Triple Bottom Line” If we restrict diving and snorkeling on coral reefs, we help the ______but hurt the ______and ______. If we restrict diving and snorkeling on coral reefs, we help the environment but hurt the economy and society

Sustainability and Ecosystems The “Triple Bottom Line” If we put up wind turbines in Eastern Washington, we help both ______and ______but may negatively impact the unique shrub-steppe _______ of the area. If we put up wind turbines in Eastern Washington, we help both economy and society but may negatively impact the unique shrub- steppe environment of the area.

Biodiversity Challenge Game –As a class, we will read the descriptions of the 4 ecosystems on Kapikua Island. (p.417-418) –Within your group of 4, each of you will manage one of the Kapikua Island ecosystems. –Your personal goal is to have the highest sustainability score while still balancing your ecosystem’s environmental, social and economic scores. (Mrs. N will be the final judge)

Biodiversity Challenge Game –Carefully follow the directions as you go through the game. –Decide who will manage which ecosystem on Kapikua Island. –Each round is color-coded. –Record data and observations as directed. –Answer the Analysis Questions at the end of the game. –Each group’s winner will receive a prize!!!

Analysis Q’s 1.What are the three components of biodiversity? 2.What ecosystem services did your group encounter during this simulation? List 4 ecosystem services - one from each ecosystem. 3.Describe one example of a relationship BETWEEN organisms within your ecosystem. 4.Describe one example of a relationship BETWEEN ecosystems on Kapikua Island. 5.What are the 3 pillars of sustainability? 6.Give a specific example of how each of the above pillars was impacted (either positively or negatively) by decisions you made as you managed your Kapikua ecosystem. 7.Which decision that you made was the most difficult? Why? Please be specific in your answer.
