ADMIRING NEW TREASURE AS WELL AS OLD Matthew 13:51-52 51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked. “Yes,” they replied. 52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.” --Mt 13:51-52
2
What did Jesus mean? In the Parable of the 'Hid Treasure' we see the Joy in the surprise discovery of a cach of wealth. In the Parable of the 'Pearl of Great Price' we see a recognition of opportunity in the discovery of the most desirable pearl ever. This parable follows a question, "Have you understood all these things."
3
Could it be that…. a measure of capacity, ability and willingness are necessary to understand?
4
BE AN INFORMED DISCIPLE "...every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven..." (vs 52)
5
Jesus spoke this parable to people steeped in Covenant History {Torah} We may not know our Old Testament well – But we know enough about what God expects – We also know that we don’t do it well.
6
Jesus was saying, "Your heritage and the Old Testament helps you understand." You have many "Old Treasures" in your storeroom. The new understanding they were gaining was a result of the new revelation they were enjoying. Everywhere Jesus went He preached the Good News of the Kingdom and performed miracles. – The people always "marveled." – It was not just words & facts. – It was a demonstration of power & Life!
7
The best way to learn the value of the Old Treasure and gain New Treasure is to hang out with Jesus! Be His disciple Commit to be with Him to learn from Him how to be like Him. That is how one gains "instruction about the kingdom of heaven."
8
PRIZE YOUR STOREROOM OF TREASURE …like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”
9
In Jewish wisdom, the "storeroom" often refers to a man's heart. It’s out of our "understanding" that we bring forth treasure. – The mix of our knowledge of facts and past events. – But enlivened by the revelation to our spirit. – The product of which is understanding. Treasures are the life changing, decision influencing "proofs." – What things convinced you to be a believer? – Certitude & conviction become treasures.
10
Each of us has a storeroom full of "treasure" The Truths of God's Word hidden in our hearts. – Direction – Insights – Correction Memories of the miracles God has done. Awareness of the times God has spoken and the things He said.
11
VALUE NEW TREASURE AND OLD …like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”
12
For Jesus’ hearers, the Old treasure was the Law & the Prophets. Jews of His day had a great heritage of the “mighty acts of God.” They had wonderful promises of a coming Messiah. They had a national pride and hope We enjoy a storehouse of Biblical history as well as past personal blessings. St. Paul say’s we have a Treasure in earthen vessels. And we have other’s testimonies.
13
For folk in Jesus’ day new treasures involved the new revelation of truth in Jesus’ teaching. Jesus taught in parables He taught with authority about a Kingdom. He exercised power of sickness, demons, nature, and death. For us today new treasures are the recent things God has done and said. This treasure is resurrection Life and the dynamic of spiritual growth.
14
Old and New Treasure characterizes both The treasures were to be shown In the future, when your children ask you, “What do these stones mean?” tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off… Josh 4:6 We also must show the treasure But you will receive Power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses… --Acts 1:8 More to be desired are God’s Words than gold & silver.
15
How can I apply all this? We have both Old and New Treasure We may not be aware of how valuable it is Or, of how badly others would like to have some
16
In Jesus Christ we have treasure both Old and New. God’s Word. Resurrection Life. Hope, Joy and Peace. The fullness of the Spirit.
17
Folk admire our treasure Sometimes with envy. Sometimes with Jealousy. We need to let them know that they can also have these treasures. Many will feel they aren’t worthy and that it’s impossible for them.
