What is it? Weaves your commentary/paraphrase with the quote in order to create smoother transitions and sentences. Rule of thumb: Use only best 8 words (it’s fine if you go a little over or under 8 words).

Text Weaving Example Chris Gaston says, “The SAT isn’t your typical aptitude test. Rather, it is arriving into a great balance, one that is considered an exam that requires critical reading, comprehensive writing and higher mathematics, as well as one that tests students’ learned skills that they use to reason.” Chris Gaston argues that the SAT is not becoming a typical achievement test but that it is coming “into a great balance” between a test of “critical reading, comprehensive writing and higher mathematics” and a test of “learned skills that (students) use to reason.”

Text Weaving Example Singer and song writer Lady Gaga claims, “Every bit of me is devoted to love and art. And I aspire to try to be a teacher to my young fans who feel just like I felt when I was younger. I just felt like a freak. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm trying to liberate them, I want to free them of their fears and make them feel that they can make their own space in the world. Singer and song writer Lady Gaga describes her life as being devoted solely to “love and art.” Because she felt like an outsider when she was younger, she tries her best to be a teacher to her fans who can relate to her experiences. She has a passion for wanting to release them of their insecurities, so they can feel like they “can make their own space in the world.”

Text Weaving Example Mark Zuckerberg, creator of Facebook says, “I just think people have a lot of fiction. But, you know, I mean, the real story of Facebook is just that we've worked so hard for all this time. I mean, the real story is actually probably pretty boring, right? I mean, we just sat at our computers for six years and coded.” Mark Zuckerberg, creator of Facebook, admits the story behind Facebook is not very interesting. He describes its foundations involving people who worked extremely hard, and sat at their computers “for six years and coded.”

Turn to the back for practice -->

Now you try… Text Weave the following quote… Barack Obama, president of the United States says, “Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential.”

Text Weave the following quote… “This sir, was a time in which you clearly saw into the injustice of a state of slavery and in which you had just apprehensions of the horrors of its condition. It was now, sir, that your abhorrence thereof was so excited, that you publicly held forth this true and valuable doctrine, which is worth to be recorded and remember in all succeeding ages.” - Banneker

Text Weave the following quote… Michael Jordan, an NBA legend, says “If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”
