Experiences and Outcomes I have investigated how whole numbers are constructed, can understand the importance of zero within the system and can use my knowledge to explain the link between a digit, its place and its value. MNU 1-02a

Progression Early Level (approximately nursery – P1) First Level (approximately P2 – P4) Second Level (approximately P5 – P7) Third/Fourth Levels (approximately S1 – S3) but these can be achieved earlier or later for some

How we teach Find out where the children’s learning is and build on this prior learning Clear learning outcomes for the lesson Using high quality open questions Active participation to engage and motivate Using a range of teaching and learning methods to challenge pupils - differentiation Children working collaboratively Using a wide range of resources including ICT

How we teach Support and challenge strategies to meet individual needs By applying learning to other situations to make learning meaningful – making links across the curriculum On going questioning throughout the lesson to share learning, show understanding and identify next steps Through immediate feedback, turning mistakes into positive learning

How we assess Diagnostic assessments– to find out what the children already know and identify next steps to build on this On-going formative assessment where children: – know what success looks like – receive individual focussed feedback – are involved in peer, self and teacher assessment – can identify their next steps in learning Summative assessment: – at the start/end of a unit of work – annual standardised assessments

How you can help Link to real life e.g. shopping list, checking a bill, reading a timetable, baking, shopping deals. Show them that you also use the skills they're learning – see parent booklets Be positive about maths! Praise your child for effort rather than talent - this shows them that by working hard they can always improve Developing a positive attitude with maths is the key to success in the long term.

Classroom Visits Active maths Co-operative learning Use of ICT –including our new iPads Taking maths outdoors Applying skills to other contexts Games Engaged and motivated pupils

Classroom Visits The children will stay in their classes Take the opportunity to visit all classes including the nursery and P5 Some classes will be doing maths outdoors Join in with the class activities Please ask the children what and how they are learning Back to hall for 10.15am for any questions

Before that…... some maths warm-up activities... demonstrate how we teach certain concepts
