The bridge collapsed on August 1, 2007 at 6:05 pm Central span of the bridge collapsed, then the adjoining 13 deaths, about 100 injured December 2013 3

1990 - The I- 35W bridge rated “structurally deficient” due to corrosion in the bearings 1993 - By law, bridges need to be inspected every 2 years, however, annual inspections were deemed necessary 2001- Study by UoM found signs of cracking and fatigue 2005 - Bridge sufficiency rating = 50% January 2007 - Internal department of transportation documents discussed the bridge collapsing or being condemned December 2013 4

Original design was flawed and someone most likely knew about it. After the collapse, bridge inspections were mandated. No timely repairs made. Bridge was overloaded and never advised the public. The issue has in general made the nation more aware of the poor state of US bridges 25% of bridges are now deficient, down from 29% in 1998. It will take 50 years to bring all bridges up to safety standards. Replacement bridge built for $234M. The I-35W Saint Anthony Falls Bridge was opened to the public on September 18, 2008.
