12 CMS review process guiding principles Identify and support R&D that matches CMS upgrade goals Avoid duplication of R&D efforts Facilitate R&D collaborations between different regions Organize financial collaborations between different regions to achieve the R&D goals (example recent submission of R&D sensor with Hamamatsu supported by US, CERN, Italy, Germany) CMS has established an Upgrade Project Office to guide the infrastructure issues of the upgrade plan, which are crucial given the constraints on power, cabling, and cooling affecting the detector. The office will oversee large scale mechanics, cooling, etc (for example already playing a role to establish if CO 2 cooling is feasible etc.) FNAL UPGRADE Meeting Daniela Bortoletto FNAL 29/October/2009
13
13 CMS Review of approved proposals The CMS upgrade peer review chair has just started a review process to evaluate the progress of proposals that were approved in 2007 The process requires: Submission of a status report A formal presentation to the upgrade management board followed by questions/discussion The first reviews will take place at the Nov. 20 and Jan. 21 Upgrade MB meetings FNAL UPGRADE Meeting Daniela Bortoletto FNAL 29/October/2009
14
14 US CMS R&D Organization US-CMS R&D Work is integrated as much as possible with the CMS Upgrade R&D project which is led by an international upgrade management group. Activities are established through upgrade proposals, reviewed by CMS internal referees, and endorsed by the upgrade management board The CMS review does not explicitly recommend budget levels, or prioritize proposals. US-CMS has to deal with a limited budget and therefore we have to take into account many other issues before supporting an approved proposal with funds FNAL UPGRADE Meeting Daniela Bortoletto FNAL 29/October/2009
15
15 US-CMS call for proposal Solicitation of proposals to support US-CMS R&D activities is initiated through the sub-systems or directly from the Pis (usually in May-June) The proposals received are assembled in the supporting documentation posted at: http://www.physics.purdue.edu/particle/us_cms We would like to have all proposals to be reviewed by CMS before providing support HCAL (D. Baden) Strips (Incandela & Demina)* DAQ (V. O’dell) ECAL (B. Hirosky)Pixels (S. Kwan)*Simulation (H. Chaung) EMU (J. Hauser)Trigger (W. Smith)*Data Links (D. 16 Request of information The information requested: 1) R&D Topic 2) People involved, percentage of time and job category (e.g. engineer, technician, etc.) 3) Breakdown of costs between materials, travel, salary 4) Major accomplishments in FY09 (can make reasonable extrapolation to end of FY09) 5) List of goals for FY10 The request does not only aim at soliciting new proposals but also to evaluate if groups already receiving R&D funds are accomplishing their goals A formal review of the progress will also be implemented in US-CMS Ad hoc reviews have been already performed to evaluate the most expensive efforts ( one was done last week for the CO2 cooling) FNAL UPGRADE Meeting Daniela Bortoletto FNAL 29/October/2009

20 R&D Budget evolution The R&D for Phase 1 and Phase 2 is complex Phase 1 will continue ramp up in FY10 and FY11. Then it will decrease as construction funds will start. R&D funding will not decrease because at that point Phase 2 R&D is needed to prepare for the TDR SystemFY08FY09FY10FY11 Phase 11,123,0002,075,000 Phase 2230,000425,000 TOTAL1,353,0002,500,0003,500,0004,150,000 FNAL UPGRADE Meeting Daniela Bortoletto FNAL 29/October/2009

21 Conclusions The detector R&D for the LHC luminosity upgrade is requiring strong support US CMS is providing limited and targeted funding to support R&D that matches the phase 1 and phase 2 upgrade determined by CMS FNAL UPGRADE Meeting Daniela Bortoletto FNAL 29/October/2009
