4. What is an apostle? Apostle: from the Greek apostolos, meaning “messenger”, especially a messenger who is sent on a mission. In the Gospels, Jesus chose the Apostles and sent them on a mission, just as Jesus was sent by the Father to preach the Gospel to the whole world.
