Lab Equipment
2
These GOGGLES are used to protect your eyes from broken glass, chemicals and flames.
3
Beaker Beakers hold solids or liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated.
4
Erlenmeyer Flask Erlenmeyer flasks hold solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated.
5
The FILTERING FLASK has a side-arm which is connected to a low pressure source. This can speed up filtration.
6
This round- bottom flask is very similar to a Florence flask in shape and use.
7
Florence Flask Rarely used in first year chemistry, it is used for the mixing of chemicals. Narrow neck prevents splash exposure.
8
The VOLUMETRIC FLASK is used to measure one specific volume of liquid (kind of like a volumetric pipet).
9
Graduated Cylinder A graduated cylinder is used to measure volumes of liquids.
10
Test Tubes 13 x 100 mm test tubes 10 x 75 mm test tubes Ignitiontube
11
Test Tube Racks Test tube racks are for holding and organizing test tubes on the laboratory counter. Plastic racks may melt in contact with very hot test tubes.
12
Test Tube Brushes Test tube brushes are used to clean test tubes and graduated cylinders. Forcing a large brush into a small test tube will often break the tube.
13
Rubber Stoppers Rubber stoppers are used to close containers to avoid spillage or contamination. Containers should never be heated when there is a stopper in place.
14
Spot Plates Spot plates are used when we want to perform many small scale reactions at one time. We will use these many times during the year.
15
Watch Glass A watch glass is used to hold a small amount of solid, such as the product of a reaction.
16
Glass Stir Rod A glass rod is used to manually stir solutions. It can also be used to transfer a single drop of a solution. Also can be made of other materials such as plastic, rubber, wood
17
Medicine Dropper A medicine dropper is used to transfer a small volume of liquid (less than one mL). On top of each medicine dropper is a “rubber bulb”
18
Funnel A funnel is used to aid in the transfer of liquid from one vessel to another.
19
FILTER PAPER is used to separate a mixture. It feels like thick coffee filter paper and has very small holes in it. It is folded into a "cone" shape.
20
Buchner Funnel
21
Vacuum Filtration Apparatus
22
A THERMOMETER is used to measure temperature. We use celsius in the chemistry lab.
23
Mohr Pipet A Mohr pipet measures and delivers exact volumes of liquids.
24
For exact volume measurements of liquids. Pipet on the left is a Volumetric pipet. It has only one graduation for delivering one exact volume. Pipet on the right is a Mohr pipet. It has graduations for delivering any number of exact volumes.
25
The PIPET BULB is used to fill a pipet with liquid.
26
Wash Bottle A wash bottle has a spout that delivers a wash solution to a specific area. Distilled water is the only liquid that should be used in a wash bottle.
27
The BALANCE is used to measure the mass of an object in grams.
28
This is a close up of the numbers on the balance.
29
Weighing Boat Weighing boats are used to weigh solids that will be transferred to another vessel.
30
Spatulas Spatulas are used to dispense solid chemicals from their containers. Chemicals should never be transferred with your bare hands.
31
Beaker Tongs Beaker tongs are used to move beakers containing hot liquids
32
LAB TONGS can be used to hold or pick up many items, but work best as tongs for picking up a hot evaporating dish.
33
Crucible Tongs For handling hot crucibles; also used to pick up other hot objects. NOT to be used for picking up beakers!
34
Test Tube Holder A test tube holder is useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle.
35
Stands and their Components Utility Clamps Utility clamps are used to secure test tubes, distillation columns, and burets to the ringstand.
36
Forceps Forceps (or tweezers) are used to pick up small objects.
37
Strikers Strikers are used to light Bunsen burners. The flints on strikers are expensive. Do not operate the striker repeatedly just to see the sparks!
38
Bunsen Burner Bunsen burners are used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids.
39
Crucible Crucibles are used for heating certain solids, particularly metals, to very high temperatures.
40
Evaporating Dish The evaporating dish is used for the heating of stable solid compounds and elements.
41
The MORTAR is the dish, and the PESTLE is the grinder. They are used to crush or grind up chemicals.
42
Triangular File Triangular files are used primarily to cut glass rod, a skill that your instructor will share with you when it becomes useful.
43
Stands and their Components Stands are a safe and convenient way to perform reactions that require heating using a Bunsen burner.
44
Stands and their Components Iron Rings Iron rings connect to a Stand and provide a stable ringstand, elevated platform for the reaction.
45
Stands and their Components Wire Gauze Wire gauze sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker. On older wire gauze, the white material is asbestos!
46
Clay Triangle The clay triangle is used as a support for porcelein crucibles when being heated over a Bunsen burner.
47
Stands and their Components Double Buret Clamps Double Buret clamps are used to burets – long graduated tubes used in titration.
48
The classic lab apparatus for a titration uses a set of double burets - pictured here. One buret holds the acid, the other the base. The common procedure is to place a measured volume of the acid into a flask, then add two drops of phenolphthalein indicator. This indicator is colorless in an acid, but turns dark pink in a base. Small amounts of the base are added to the flask as it is being slowly twirled to mix the solution. At the end-point, or "neutralization", the phenolphthalein will be barely pink when viewed over a white background.

51
The MAGNETIC STIR BAR is a magnet covered with teflon.
53
Litmus Paper Red litmus paper is used to identify bases. Blue litmus paper is used to identify acids.
54
Gas Collecting Bottle We use gas collecting bottles when large volumes of gases are produced, and must be collected by the displacement of water.
55
Glass Plates Glass plates provide a surface for semi-micro scale experiments, such as drop reactions and testing of acids and bases.
