Linear equation in one variable is an equation having only one variable with the highest degree of the variable as one(1). FOR EXAMPLE, 5x + 3 = 8 Here,  There is only on variable that is ‘x’.  The highest degree of the variable is 1. SO, it is a linear equation in one variable.

For this we will take an example, i.e. 10x + 25 = 125 If we take X = 10 then L.H.S. will be equal to R.H.S. Here, 10 will be the solution or the root of the equation. A Linear equation has only one solution which is a integer or a rational number.

Friends, solving of any linear equation depends upon the variable. 1. Variables on only one side & consonants on the other To find solution for a equation we perform mathematical operations on both the sides of it so that equality remains unchanged. For example, 4x + 6 = 14 4x + 6 – 6 = 14 – 6 4x = 8 4x/4 = 8/4 x = 2

2. Variables are on both side For this we use transportation to write variables on one side & the consonants on the other. Then we perform operations on both the sides to get the solution. For example, 2y – 8 = 4y – 6 2y + 4y = -6 + 8 6y = 2 y = 2/6 y = 1/3

To solve this type of equations we use cross-multiplication. To understand this take one example: 4x – 4/8x + 12 = 1/28 28(4x – 4) = 8x + 12 112x – 112 = 8x + 12 112x – 8x = 12 + 112 104x = 124 x = 124/104 x = 31/26
