1 SBI 3CTHE CIRCULATORY SYSTEMName:__________________ January 10, 2007 Read pages 195-200 in your text, paying particular attention to the key terms. On a large sheet of paper draw and label a schematic diagram of the circulatory of a human (mammal). Use pencil until you are sure that the diagram and written material is correct, then you may (should) use colour.. Your diagram should include: Neatly printed labels Explanations of terms The major parts of the heart including valves Pulmonary and systemic circulation The differences between arteries and veins and capillaries (1. structure, 2. function, 3. mechanism of blood movement) A legend to showing oxygenated and deoxygenated blood Arrows to show the direction of blood flow A sidebar showing the components of the blood and their function

3 Parts of the circulatory system: Heart (pump) Arteries (conduct blood away from the heart) Capillaries (exchange of nutrients and waste) Veins (conduct blood back to the heart) Blood (carries nutrients and waste) Lymph Vessels (drain fluid from tissues back into blood vessels)

4 The Mammalian Heart 4 Chambers 2 Pumps -Left Side: pumps blood rich in oxygen -Right Side: pumps blood poor in oxygen (deoxygenated)

5 How the Heart Pumps Blood Check out this animation! http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/hhw/h hw_pumping.html Use your text (p. 198) to draw arrows showing the direction of movement of blood on the heart diagram. Use BLUE to lightly shade in chambers and blood vessels that contain deoxygenated blood. Use RED to lightly shade in chambers and blood vessels that contain oxygenated blood.

6 Arteries Thick walls to withstand high pressure Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart Pulse

7 Atherosclerosis Blockage or narrowing of arteries caused by build-up of cholesterol plaque

8 Capillaries Thin walls Exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) Exchange of nutrients and waste Inner diameter the same as one red blood cell

9 Veins Thin walls Blood flows towards heart Blood moved by contractions of muscles  Valves prevent blood from flowing backwards Failure of valves leads to varicose veins 

10 Blood Red blood cells carry oxygen White blood cells fight invaders (viruses, bacteria) Platelets aid in clotting Just over half of blood is plasma (mainly water)

13 Lymphatic System Lymph is carried by lymph vessels and is dumped into veins near the heart Lacteals from villi in the intestine empty into lymph vessels Lymph nodes are sites where white blood cells fight invaders Lymph nodes may swell when you are sick
