CARDIOVASCULAR - 3 BLOOD VESSELS AND ATHEROSCLEROSIS
2
BLOOD VESSELS Arteries carry blood away from the heart; veins carry blood to the heart. Main arteries are muscular; they have elastin, which allows for recoil. When they fill up with blood, they start squeezing it along the pathway, to drive the blood continuously. They have smooth muscle for vasoconstriction or vasodilation. Veins have valves ; they rely on skeletal muscle to move the blood.
3
Microcirculation Precapillary sphincter muscles regulate the flow of blood through capillaries
4
The action of one-way venous valves -- veins have much lower pressure than arteries -- skeletal muscles massage the veins as they contract, squeezing blood towards the heart. This is called the skeletal muscle pump. -- venous valves prevent backflow. Once blood gets from abdominal veins to the thoracic veins, its movement towards the heart is helped by the contraction of the diaphragm.
5
Heart Attack -- blockage of the coronary artery blood supply. -- cells die, lose pumps, and the ventricles become arrhythmic. -- sometimes there is an extremely fast heart rate.
