4. H OW DOES IT ALL WORK ??? The most important part of the Respiratory system is the breathing part. The body needs oxygen to live and function appropriately. Without enough oxygen, the brain doesn't work right, the body doesn't heal it's wounds, the heart begins to panic and beat faster, the entire body begins to die. Exactly how does it work?Respiratory system The Respiratory system begins with the nose. The nose is the body's humidification and filtering system. The nose filters dirt and other particles that should not get inside the body. Those nose hairs catch it. The nose is also a humidification system so that the lungs don't dry out. The mouth and the wind pipe come next. The wind pipe is called the trachea. Food goes down the oesophagus into the stomach, air goes down the trachea into the lungs. That is why people gag and cough when something goes down the wrong way. The lungs are not meant to have food in them.

5. C ONTINUED... Next the lungs. This is where the air exchange takes place. The air goes into the lungs,where the gas exchange takes place. The lung tissue is full of blood vessels. The oxygen gets dropped off by the lungs into the blood vessels, while at the same time picking up the carbon dioxide. You exhale to get rid of the carbon dioxide and inhale to get the oxygen from the air into the body. If there is some sort of blockage in the lungs that prevents the lungs from dropping of the oxygen and picking up the carbon dioxide, this can be considered to be lung disease.lung disease The muscle that helps the lungs to breathe is called the diaphragm. Breathing is something that we don't even think about... that is unless it is something that becomes difficult to do.

S OME I NTERESTING F ACTS... RRespiration: is the release of energy from food, takes place in animal and plant cells. WWe breathe 13 pints of air every minute. EEach lung contains 300-350 million respiratory units called alveoli making it a total of 700 million in both lungs. MMore than half a liter of water per day is lost through breathing. PPeople under 30 years of age take in double the amount of oxygen in comparison to a 80 year old. YYawning brings more oxygen to the lungs.
