Chapter 5 A Journey into the Eukaryotic Cell Mrs. Park December 2015

Lesson 1 and 2: Cell Membrane and Transportation Objectives: 1.Explain the bilayer structure of cellular membranes. 2.Identify the function of other molecules found in the cellular membrane. 3.Describe a cell’s inside environment.

Lesson 1 Vocabulary Bilayer Plasma membrane Fluid mosaic model Transport protein Extracellar matrix Cytoplasm Cytosol

Cell Membrane Structure Membranes are made of phospholipids. A lipid molecule with a head and a tail. The head is polar (has a charge) and water hydrophilic (water-loving) Tail has no charge and is hydrophobic (water- hating).

The Membrane Bilayer Two layers Heads on the outside, so they can touch water-based solutions. Tails on the inside, prevent water from passing through.

Membrane Location Surrounds the cell of animals and humans. Surrounds organelles, specialized structures in cells (nucleus, mitochondria, and others)

Cell Membrane Function Hydrophilic outside lets the membrane and organelles interact with water-based solutions. Hydrophobic inside limits what can enter or exit the cell. Cell membrane is also called the plasma membrane

Selectively Permeable Membrane The membrane blocks some molecules because of their size or shape.

Transport Helpers Proteins in the membrane often help move molecules through the membrane. Proteins in the membrane that help move molecules across are transport proteins.

Extracellular Matrix Animal cells have a sticky coating on the outside of the cell. Has fibers in it that help hold the cells together. Allows molecules to pass from one cell to another.

Inside the Plasma Membrane Inside cells is cytoplasm, a jelly-like fluid. Cytoplasm is made up of cytosol.

Chapter 5 Lesson 2 In and out of the Cell In and out of the cell: Passive Transport Facillitated diffusion Active transport
