Introductory Clause Usually a dependent clause that introduces your independent clause Remember dependent clauses cannot stand on their own and one way to attach them is to the front of an independent clause. In this instance, it becomes an introductory clause. It must be separated from your main sentence by a comma. Before you go out tonight, you need to make sure that all of your homework is done. When I got home, I went straight to bed.
4
Introductory Phrase Same as an introductory clause but a phrase does not contain both a subject and a verb like a clause does. Still must be followed by a comma before adding the main part of your sentence. Upon entering the house, the detectives were startled to find a trail of blood leading into the front door. Out and about in the woods all day, the dogs came back covered in burs.
5
Introductory Word A single word that introduces your main sentence. Include a comma afterwards. Today, we are going to the fair. Unfortunately, the Redskins did not win. Fortunately, there is always another game.
6
Appositive Clause Clause that is typically placed next to a noun in a sentence to add additional information Essential Clause means it is essential to the meaning of the sentence and therefore should not be offset with commas. Freddy hopes to return to the city where he met he beautiful wife. Nonessential clause means it is not essential to the meaning of the sentence and just adds some subtle information; therefore, it should be off set with commas. Freddy and his wife hope to return to Boston Massachusetts, one of their favorite places.
