1 Lesson 101: Genetic Engineering Research 1 DO NOW: (5 minutes) 1. When have you heard the word GMO before? HOMEWORK: 1.Read textbook p. 319-321. 2.Answer Questions #1-5 on p. 321. Be ready for a reading check. Today’s Plan: Do Now, Article and Questions, Research, Closure OBJECTIVE: We will learn to 1.Explain the controversy about genetically modified foods. 2.Research a specific example of genetic engineering.

2 Genetically Modified Organisms

3 Do Genetically Modified Foods Need Stricter Controls? 1.In your own words, explain the major issues about GM foods. Critics- Might cause dangerous, unexpected effects on people or the environment. Supporters- Provide additional nutrients to diets and reduce the need for pesticides/fertilizer. 2. What are the risks and benefits of GM plants? Risks- unexpected effects, allergic reactions, kill beneficial insects, antibiotic resistant bacteria, produce weeds that don’t respond to herbicides. Benefits- provide essential vitamins, higher yields could prevent hunger in parts of the world, eliminate pesticide use, fuel, plastic, source of medicine. 3. Are stricter regulations needed? Give reasons for your opinion

4 Closure 1. Summarize what your group completed today during your research time in your daily progress handout.
