Emerging Scenario of Electrical Grid Traditionally we have been consumer to electrical grid. How many of us are contributing power to the grid? Courtesy: howstuffworks.com Distributed Generation lets us Contribute to Grid! CIGRÉ Definition: Microgrids are electricity distribution systems containing loads and distributed energy resources, that can be operated in a controlled, coordinated way either while connected to the main power network or while islanded. -Nearly 1.3 billion people without electricity. -Renewable electricity gen. grows to 31% in 2035. Source : World Energy Outlook Microgrid is not only Renewable Power Generation. Microgrid is not only Virtual Power Plant.

Challenges in a Microgrid Microgrid provides Uninterrupted supply to community -Focus on serving the local community & providing excess power to the grid. -On Grid & Off Grid Scenarios allowing total isolation with grid. -Being Remote - more autonomous. This would necessitate research in -Study operation of microgrid to enhance renewable penetration. -Define & develop control strategies - Identify and develop communication infrastructures and protocols; -Simulate & demonstrate microgrid operation in labs. Utilities view microgrid as competitor Challenges in a Microgrid! Significant Collaboration!

Conclusion & Summary The Visualization programs deliver a platform for systemic thinking that termed ‘Big Picture’. An approach using Animated Visualization tools provided as open source can be part of collaborative platform for new ideas and explore new solutions faster. Based on feedback the following next steps are planned: – Explorative scenarios on Microgrid applied on this platform. – Visualization & Simulation Integration for Explorative Scenarios. – Collaborative Cloud for Scenario Visualization and Experimentation.
